The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1266 when Lauterbach was raised to town as a "propugnaculum vel turrim", a "bulwark" or a "fortification tower" to secure the western side of the town fortifications. From 1580 to 1581, the main building , which dates back to the Gothic period, was expanded into a castle with a Renaissance portal and a tube fountain . The castle has a tenant house with a curved gable and a castle gate with cents and the same number in the coat of arms stone . The shape of the courtyard from the second half of the 17th century has been preserved. The castle was partially destroyed in 1848, and it was rebuilt in its current form around 1887.
Today the castle houses the administration of the Barons Riedesel zu Eisenbach with the Riedesel archive.
