The Old Castle , also Riedesel MOORISH Castle called, is a former hilltop castle site and later castle on a hill above the Schwalm in Altenburg ( Am Schlossberg 28 ), a district of Alsfeld in Vogelsbergkreis in Hesse .

history

The time of origin of the former castle complex can probably be dated to the time of the Merovingians . The castle is mentioned for the first time in 1178 and in 1193, Sifridus of Aldinburg , a country nobleman in Altenburg is mentioned for the first time . The Aldinburgs were feudal people of the Fulda Monastery and their castle served to protect the abbey's possessions. In 1314 the castle was taken by Landgrave Otto, razed and rebuilt in 1319.

In a Salbuch from 1574 there are three castle fiefs: Christoph von Liederbach, Stam Rotzmann and the Junker von Lehrbach. The fourth fiefdom of the Riedesel von Eisenbach was pledged to the von Liederbach, who lived in the castle until their line was extinguished in 1605. In 1681 Baron Hermann XVI. Riedesel took over the fiefdom and moved to Altenburg, which is still owned by the family today.

In 1647 the castle was destroyed by troops from Lower Hesse in the course of the Thirty Years War , after 1681 it was renovated like a castle and a mansion was built in the middle of the 18th century .

The north wing and the so-called church wing, two-storey plastered buildings with a final mansard roof , are dated to the year 1744, a younger extension with a gable roof as well as a group of secular buildings and a residential wing are dated to the 19th century. The half-timbered construction of the house with double-locked storey struts can be dated to the second half of the 19th century. In the foundation walls of the south wing there are still remnants of the medieval castle complex.

The Protestant castle church , built between 1748 and 1750 as a transverse church , is located in the center of the castle district.
