The rear castle with Hinterturm is a castle in the city slot in the Vogelsbergkreis in central Hesse and one of the five Slasher Castles Hinterburg, Vorderburg , Ottoburg and bay castle that included in the city walls medieval formed fortification, to which must be something outlying Castle Hall Castle belongs .

description

The Hinterburg was mentioned for the first time in 1493 and rebuilt as a three-storey building from 1561 to 1565, rebuilt in 1647 and housed an old people's home of the Graf Görtzische Foundation in its main and ancillary building, the Count's Forester's House , and in the Schachtenburg from 1950 to the end of 2015. In 2016 the building complex was sold together with the Schachtenburg to three private investors. The Hinterburg building complex has housed a multi-generation facility since 2017.

The structure of the main building of the rear castle shows a pure renaissance style with magnificent gables and a stair tower in the middle on the long side with an octagonal half-timbered structure and a baroque slate roof.

Back tower

The background is a tower built in the 14th century, 36 meters high keep with underlying dungeons , served as a guard room and was originally only be entered via a swing-bridge from 1553 built housing the rear castle. Since the 17th century it wore a baroque slate hood and in 1906 it was given a stone hood. Today the back tower is a popular observation tower that is only accessible with an elevator . Since 1991 the back tower has been used as a Schlitzer Christmas candle in the run-up to Christmas .
