The moated castle Grebenau , formerly also called Burg Capelle , is an abandoned medieval moated castle on the left bank of the Jossa on the southern edge of the town center of Grebenau ( Amthof 2 ) in the Vogelsberg district in Hesse .
The castle was built in the 13th century on the site of an earlier imperial chancellery, which served to secure the "road through the short Hessians" , by the Counts of Ziegenhain , who were tenants of both Fulda and Hersfeld Abbey . From 1254 to 1273 the castle and 14 other castles in the Rhön and Vogelsberg were destroyed by the Fulda abbot Bertho II, known as "Abbot Fingerhut" . The castle building was later rebuilt by the Johannitern and a commandery founded around 1278 .
In the following 250 years "daz hus zu Grebenouwe" came to Landgrave Heinrich von Hessen , Friedrich von Lißberg , Rohrich von Eisenbach and Frytschin von Schlitz .
Today the town hall is located in the building . The cellar of the former moated castle is still preserved.
