Burgstall Nieder-Ohmen

The Burgstall Nieder-Ohmen , locally called Burgschale or Burgschall , describes a defunct Niederungsburg of the tower castle type on a small island surrounded by the Ohm and the Mühlgraben , called Burgschoan . The restored remains of the recovered castle are on the left bank of the Ohm and, significantly, in the Burgschall corridor on the northern outskirts of Nieder-Ohmen , a district of the community of Mücke in the Vogelsberg district in Hesse .

The tower castle was probably built to control and secure an old trade route from Alsfeld - Laubach to Grünberg - Ulrichstein . Its location on the river island was ideal for controlling the important ford that existed here .

During work on a sewer in 1986, the foundations of a round tower with a diameter of about 13 meters and a wall thickness of 3 meters were exposed and the foundation walls restored. Nothing has been documented about the history of the tower castle. Dated fragments point to a Carolingian - Ottonian origin in the late 9th or early 10th century. It may be seen as part of a royal estate attested to in Nieder-Ohmen in 1002 . Further finds can be found up to the 11th century. There are no finds from the 12th to 15th centuries. This leads to the conclusion that the castle was no longer used from the 12th century and fell into disrepair .
