On the parcel "Die Hall" there was originally a fortified courtyard belonging to the von Schlitz family. It was expanded in the 16th century and later became the permanent residence of the count family.

Friedrich Wilhelm Graf von Schlitz called von Görtz had the baroque palace built on the site between 1706 and 1712. The plans came from Louis Rémy de la Fosse . In 1755 the castle burned down and was renovated. Around 1800, Count Karl Heinrich had the mansard roof removed and the hall castle added. This gave the castle its current classical appearance. According to plans by the master builder and then professor of construction at the University of Gießen Hugo von Ritgen , a historic extension in the Lower Saxony style was added in 1867 to the west side of the central economic building.

In 1954, the count's family donated the castle and park to the town of Schlitz . It was prepared with reinforcement of the ceilings for the school operation of a high school , but also destroyed the classical stucco ceilings. The grammar school existed in the castle from 1956 to 1977.

From 1978 to 2002 the castle was empty. There was water damage and severe dry rot infestation. Gutted, renovated and rebuilt from 2001 to 2003, the Hesse State Music Academy is now located in the castle . The palace garden room can be used for weddings.

The castle park in the style of English landscape gardens contains valuable groups of trees and rare domestic and foreign trees.
