Schachtenburg

The Schachtenburg is a castle in the town of Schlitz in the Vogelsbergkreis in Hesse and is one of the five Schlitz castles : These are, in addition to the Vorderburg, the rear castle with the rear tower and the Ottoburg , all of which were integrated into the city wall and formed the medieval city fortifications, together with the Schachtenburg and the Hallenburg Castle just outside .

With the lost castle Niederschlitz and the ruins of the Seeburg there are seven castles in and around the town of Schlitz.

description

The entrance portal of the castle

In 1557 the Schachtenburg was built by Elisabeth von Schachten, widow of the Hessian war council Wilhelm von Schachten and daughter of the Junker Werner von Schlitz. The south house with a sandstone storey as well as the north house built in the first half of the 17th century did not belong to the medieval town fortifications. Until 1894, the seat of the Grand Ducal Hessian District Court was in the Schachtenburg, after which it was used as a residential building, housed a chapel and today it is part of the retirement home of the Graf Görtzische Stiftung.

The castle portal shows late Gothic elements with Renaissance ornamentation and mysterious symbols framed by rods that are intertwined to form a pretzel , which plays a major role in the customs of the Schlitzerland. Signs for love, marriage and birth can be found on the base. To the right of the door, a square sandstone relief bears the coat of arms of those von Schlitz and those of Schachten with a mocking mask ( Breilecker ) above it, probably from an old city gate .
