location

The Burgstall is located about 900 meters northeast below the old town of Schlitz, not far from the now disused train station.

history

The small tower castle was probably built in the 12th century by the von Schlitz family as a locking bolt on the old Hersfelder Landstrasse. The castle was destroyed in 1261 in the course of a collegiate feud against Abbot Heinrich von Hersfeld and Count Gottfried von Ziegenhain by Abbot Bertho von Leibolz from Fulda and not rebuilt.

A flattened 1.5 meter high castle hill with a diameter of 50 meters with a later built stone monolith still bears witness to the former castle, whose moats fed by the Schlitz are completely filled.
