California is a music album released on July 1, 2016 by the American band Blink-182 . It is the seventh studio album released by the punk rock band and also the first album without founding member Tom DeLonge . This was replaced by Matt Skiba .

On May 19, 2017, the album was released as a deluxe edition, including twelve new songs.

Emergence

Matt Skiba in June 2015

After another falling out within the band, Travis Barker and Mark Hoppus separated from Tom DeLonge. The reason for this was the numerous side projects of DeLonges, which hindered the creation process for another studio album by the band. Since the band had already planned some gigs at that time, Alkaline Trio signed Matt Skiba as a replacement. After Hoppus and Barker had indicated several times that Skiba could become an integral part of the band, the first recordings for the new album began together in January 2016. John Feldmann (previously with The Used , Good Charlotte , Story of the Year , Escape the Fate and 5 Seconds of Summer ) took over the production of the album. It was recorded at Foxy Studios in Los Angeles , California .

The album's first single, Bored to Death , was released on April 27, 2016 and was available for download. In addition, the songs Built This Pool , Rabbit Hole and No Future were published on the Internet before the album was released.

style

After the musically and lyrically more serious predecessors Blink-182 and Neighborhoods , the album largely returns to pop-punk and contains more positive melodies and lyrics. For example, Cynical , Brohemian Rhapsody and The Only Thing That Matters tie in with many of the band's songs from the 90s with fast drums and guitar riffs . Quieter and more melodic songs like California and San Diego , as well as Home Is Such a Lonely Place , a ballad consisting of acoustic guitars and string instruments, add variety . With Los Angeles , however, there is also a song that takes up the more experimental phase of the self-titled album. With Built This Pool and Brohemian Rhapsody the “toilet humor” known from previous albums also returned. Both tracks are similar to older songs such as Family Reunion and Happy Holidays, You Bastard because of their satirical lyrics and short game lengths .

Artwork

The album cover shows two people, a man and a woman, sitting in a car. The man has white skin and resembles a skull, the woman turns in his direction and sheds a tear. The cover is based on the style of Pop Art .

The English street artist D * Face (Dean Stockton), a friend of Travis Barker, was responsible for the design.
