Karl von Gareis

Karl Heinrich Franz Gareis (also Carl Gareis , born April 24, 1844 in Bamberg , Bavaria , † January 15, 1923 in Munich ), later von Gareis , was a German lawyer and specialist author .

Life

Gareis was the son of Wilhelm Gareis (1806-1887), director of the Bamberg appellate court , and the Kunigunde Rothmaier. He attended grammar schools in Munich and Amberg and studied law at the universities of Munich , Heidelberg and Würzburg from 1863 to 1866 , where he also received his doctorate in 1868 and later qualified as a professor . From 1870 to 1870 he was a private lecturer in Würzburg. After having been professor of law at the University of Bern since 1873, specializing in commercial law , he accepted an appointment at the University of Giessen in 1875 . From 1884 to 1888 he was chancellor there.

From 1888 he taught at the University of Königsberg and from 1902 in Munich . In 1893/94 Gareis was prorector of the Albertus University in Königsberg, where he was rector from 1893 to 1894, and in 1912/13 he took over the rectorate of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich where he taught from 1902 to 1917.

As Chancellor of the University of Giessen he was a member of the first chamber of the state estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse from 1884 to 1888 . On May 13, 1884, he took his deputy oath. On April 1, 1888, he resigned as Chancellor and Member of Parliament.

From 1878 to 1881 Gareis was a member of the German Reichstag as a member of the National Liberal Party . Gareis also wrote pamphlets on international law and contributed to a legal encyclopedia . In addition, from 1902 Gareis was the editor of the magazine Blätter für Rechtsanaltung .

Carl Gareis Prize

The Faculty of Law and Economics at the University of Bayreuth has been awarding the Carl Gareis Prize for outstanding dissertations in the field of legal history or intellectual property law since 2009 . The prize is endowed with € 1,000.
