Carl E. Vuono (born October 18, 1934 in Monongahela , Pennsylvania ) is a former general in the United States Army .

Life

The officer of Italian-Finnish descent began his military career in the field artillery after graduating from the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York . From 1967 to 1968 he attended Marine Corps Command and Staff College in Fredericksburg, Virginia and from 1972 to 1973 the United States Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania .

Carl E. Vuono served in the Vietnam War as an artillery officer from 1966 to 1967 in the 1st Infantry Division , 1970 in the 1st Cavalry Division and until 1971 as commander of the 1st Battalion of the 77th Artillery Regiment of this division.

From 1985 to 1986 he was Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Planning in the US Army. After several assignments in the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command , he became its commanding general in 1986 . He was then from June 23, 1987 to June 21, 1991 as General Chief of Staff of the Army and thus the highest ranking officer in the United States Army.

Following his retirement from the army, he joined Military Professional Resources in 1993 , a private security and military company founded in 1987.

He married Patricia A. Hall in 1960 and has a daughter and two sons.

Awards

In 2003 he received the Association of West Point's Distinguished Graduate Award. He also holds an honorary doctorate in public administration from Shippensburg University .
