from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carl Ernst Heinrich August Woebcken (born October 18, 1878 in Neuchâtel ; † August 31, 1965 in Sillenstede ) was a German theologian , pastor and historian .

Life

Carl Woebcken was born as the son of Pastor Carl Wöbcken (1846–1903) and his wife Wilhelmine nee. Schüßler (1849–1923) was born in Neuchâtel and spent his childhood and youth in the rectory in Sillenstede . He attended the Mariengymnasium in Jever and then studied from 1896 to 1900, following his father, theology in Göttingen and Halle . During his time in Halle he joined the Germania fraternity. After studying theology, he became a private tutor in Pomerania for a short time and then temporary and vacancy preacher in Varel , Schönemoor and Ganderkesee . In August 1903 he passed the exam and after a temporary job as assistant preacher in Easter Castle, he was pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran parishes of Altenesch (1904-1911) and Sillenstede (1911-1947).

Already during his training Woebcken dealt with family research and regional history and became active as a writer. In 1917 he was a friend of Rüstringen's mayor, Emil Lueken, and asked him to work on the recently founded magazine “Die Tide”. Woebcken then wrote a series of cultural-historical sketches and descriptions of the locations of East Friesland based on the model of the hikes through the Mark Brandenburg by Theodor Fontane , which were very successful with the readership and were published in book form in 1919 under the title Wanderfahrten durch das Friesenland . Shortly thereafter, the works Frisian Castles and Oldenburg Walks followed , which enjoyed similar success.

From 1920 Woebcken worked together with the Wilhelmshaven port construction director Wilhelm Krüger and the Oldenburg teacher and marsh researcher Heinrich Schütte on several geological and hydrographic studies.

He also published papers on the introduction of Christianity in the eastern part of Friesland and on the historical development of the Protestant Church in the district of Friesland , also on the coastal and Wurtenforschung . Primarily he devoted himself to the history of the Frisians in writings and lectures .

On his initiative, a meeting of "Friends of Frisian History and Literature" took place in Jever in August 1925 . This first "Friesian Congress" was followed by others in Leeuwarden (1927), in Husum (1930, here founding of a " Friesian Council " with delegates from North, East and West Friesland) and in Medemblik (1937).

Carl Woebcken also intervened in a contemporary historical discussion: In 1935, as a Protestant pastor, he protested against the anti-church tendencies of the play “De Stedinge. Von Untergang einer Volkes ”by August Hinrichs and criticized the simplification of historical findings in a letter to the author, in which it says:“ Nowhere in the reports of my contemporaries do I find that priests were driven out. Neither do I find anywhere that prisoners were burned alive. ”The controversial folk piece from 1934 is about the battle of Altenesch , in which an army of crusaders destroyed the peasant republic of Stedingen . Hinrichs wrote the piece for the 700th anniversary of the battle in Altenesch , where it was performed for the first time.

In 1948 Woebcken retired for health reasons. He was married to Antonie Sophie Wilhelmine born on September 25, 1912. Minssen (1879–1963), the daughter of Medical Councilor Heinrich Minssen (1847–1932). She thus belonged to a family of scholars based in Jever, which also included the linguist Johann Friedrich Minssen (1823-1901). The couple had two children.

Carl Woebcken was buried in the Warftenfriedhof next to the St. Florian Church in Sillenstede.

Honors

In Sillenstede, the Carl-Woebcken-Weg at the St. Florian Church was named after the pastor. The city of Jever named Carl-Woebcken-Strasse after him.
