Carlsbad is a small town in the southeast of the US state New Mexico in Eddy County . Carlsbad is located on the Pecos River , about 28 kilometers northeast of the Carlsbad Caverns National Park .
history
The present city of Carlsbad was founded on September 15, 1888 . At that time the settlement was named "Eddy". Only after the discovery and subsequent commercial use of local mineral springs was the municipality renamed Carlsbad, which is reminiscent of the famous European spa town of Karlovy Vary (Czech: Karlovy Vary , Czech Republic ). On March 25, 1918 , the then governor of New Mexico granted Carlsbad town charter. Through the rediscovery of the Carlsbad Caverns by local cowboys and the subsequent establishment of the Carlsbad Caverns National Park , Carlsbad gained a high degree of popularity. In 1925 , potassium carbonate was discovered near the city , which was mined for the American market. When the dismantling came to an end in the 1960s, the citizens and city leaders of Carlsbad campaigned for the establishment of a nuclear waste disposal facility ( Waste Isolation Pilot Plant ). The Congress agreed to the plans for, and construction began 1980 . Before the first shipment of nuclear waste reached the warehouse in 1999 , the US Department of Energy opened an office in Carlsbad specifically for this purpose.
