geography

The city is located about 30 km from Milan and Bergamo on the Adda and was a strategically important point for crossing the river. The districts of Cascate, Cascine San Pietro, Groppello d'Adda and Taranta also belong to the municipality.

The place is known for two battles: the Battle of Cassano on August 16, 1705 between the Austrians under Prince Eugene and the French under Vendôme (the only battle that Prince Eugene did not win), and the Battle of the Adda on August 27th. April 1799 between the Austrians and Russians under Suvorov and the French under Moreau , who then had to vacate Lombardy.

The economy of the place was originally determined by agriculture, since the 19th century the Linificio Canapificio Nazionale , a large spinning mill, was located here.
