Life

Charles Joseph Chaput joined the Capuchin Order in 1965 . After his theological training, he studied philosophy at St. Fidelis College Seminary in Herman, Pennsylvania , and psychology at Catholic University in Washington DC, and education at Capuchin College in Washington DC On August 29, 1970, he received from the Bishop of Salina , Cyril Vogel , the ordination . In 1971 he received his Masters in Theology from the University of San Francisco . From 1971 to 1974 he was a professor at St. Fidelis and from 1974 to 1977 he was head of communications for the Capuchin Province near Pittsburgh . In 1977 he became pastor of Holy Cross Parish in Thornton, Colorado , as well as vicar of the Capuchin Province for Central America. He became secretary and finance officer of the religious province in 1980 and finally provincial in 1983 .

Pope John Paul II named him Bishop of Rapid City , South Dakota . He was ordained bishop on July 26, 1988 by the then Apostolic Pro-Nuncio Pio Laghi . Co- consecrators were John Robert Roach , Archbishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis , and James Francis Stafford , then Archbishop of Denver .

On March 18, 1997, Chaput was named Archbishop of Denver. He soon gained a national profile through his utter allegiance to the Holy See ; when other dioceses had to close their seminaries due to a shortage of listeners, he founded the St. John Vianney Theological Seminary in 1999 and incorporated it into the Pontifical Lateran University . From 1998 to 2011, Chaput ordained 71 priests for the Archdiocese of Denver. Another successful educational initiative was the Augustine Institute , a lay catechist academy for lay people who want to participate in the new evangelization of North America.

Archbishop Chaput has appeared repeatedly in international exchanges. He served as a member of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (2003-2006). In 2005 he was in Córdoba for the anti-Semitism conference of the OSCE . In 2009 he was awarded the Canterbury Medal for Promoting Religious Freedom.

He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the world's largest religious television network, EWTN , St. John Vianney Theological Seminary in Northern Colorado, the Fellowship of Catholic University Students, the Catholic Association of Latino Leaders, and the World Youth Alliance International.

Chaput has been appointed a visitor by the Pope repeatedly at prominent disciplinary negotiations. In 2005/2006 he was an Apostolic Visitator of the North American seminaries, in 2007 he visited Bishop William Martin Morris in Toowoomba , Australia, whereupon Morris had to resign. In 2009/2010 he took part in the visitation of the scandalous legionaries of Christ .

He was appointed Archbishop of Philadelphia on July 19, 2011 and ceremonially installed on September 8, 2011.

Charles Joseph Chaput belongs to the Indian tribe of the Prairie Band of the Potawatomi . After Donald Edmond Pelotte, he is the second Native American to be ordained a bishop in the USA; he is the first of this ethnic background to become archbishop.

In January 2017, Chaput warned critics of US President Donald Trump to moderate the dispute over the entry ban for people from seven Muslim-majority countries . He saw behind the criticism of Trump a "special kind of progressive intolerance, which applies to this administration's new approach to a series of difficult social issues," which he primarily addressed the issue of abortion. At the same time, he described Trump's positions on immigration policy as "worrying".

On January 23, 2020, Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation.

Positions

Chaput has proclaimed several times that Catholics who live in a state of serious sin or who deny the teaching of the Church should voluntarily withhold communion.

In a 2004 interview with The New York Times , Chaput stated that it is considered sinful behavior to vote for presidential candidate John Kerry because Kerry is a supporter of abortion . The archbishop has since been considered a politically active bishop and has been criticized for it.

Chaput repeatedly criticized Barack Obama for the president's abortion policy. He accuses him of wanting to reverse the polarity of American culture in the areas of marriage , family , sexuality , bioethics and religion in public life .

Archbishop Chaput spoke out at the "Youth Synod" in October 2018 against the use of the abbreviation LBGT in church documents.
