Charlison "Charlie" Benschop (born August 21, 1989 in Willemstad , Curaçao , Netherlands Antilles ) is a Dutch football player . He is under contract with Apollon Limassol and has played for the national team of the Dutch country Curaçao since 2017 .
Career
societies
The young striker initially played for his first senior club, RKC Waalwijk , and moved to AZ Alkmaar in 2010 . In 2012 he left the Netherlands and moved to the French first division club Stade Brest , where he was unable to assert himself; In addition, his club rose from bottom of the table in Ligue 2 . On July 7, 2013, Benschop signed a contract with the German second division Fortuna Düsseldorf until June 30, 2014 , where he was supposed to replace Dani Schahin, who had switched to 1. FSV Mainz 05 . He played his first competitive game for Fortuna on July 22, 2013 (1st matchday) in a 1-0 win at home against Energie Cottbus . Due to an injury, Benschop was replaced by Gerrit Wegkamp in the 71st minute . During the 2013/14 season he scored 12 goals in 28 league games. Fortuna Düsseldorf used a purchase option and signed him until June 30, 2017. By the winter break 2014/15 , Benschop was Fortuna's most successful goalscorer with ten goals. On July 1, 2015, he moved to the Bundesliga club Hannover 96 . In the 2-2 away game against Darmstadt 98 on August 15, 2015 (1st matchday), he scored his first Bundesliga goal with the goal to make it 1-1 in the 48th minute, three minutes after being substituted for Felix Klaus . At the end of the 2015/16 season he was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga with Hannover 96 , and back to the Bundesliga at the end of the 2016/17 season .
After his contract with Hannover 96 expired, Benschop moved to the second division FC Ingolstadt 04 for the 2018/19 season , with whom he signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2020. In Ingolstadt, who were in danger of relegation, Benschop made nine appearances, mostly as a substitute, in which he scored a goal, until the winter break under coaches Stefan Leitl , Alexander Nouri , Roberto Pätzold and Jens Keller .
On January 23, 2019 returned Benschop to the Netherlands and moved to the end of the season on loan to first division promoted De Graafschap , for which he 14 times aground (3 goals) and with whom he could not hold the class at the end of the season.
Without returning to Ingolstadt, the striker stayed in the Dutch premier league in summer 2019 and signed a two-year contract with FC Groningen .
On January 13, 2020 it was announced that Charlison had signed a contract with the Cypriot first division club Apollon Limassol until May 2021 .
National team
Benschop came in March 2010 in a game for the U21 selection of the KNVB in which he scored a goal.
On October 10, 2017, he made his debut in the 2-1 victory of the Curaçao national team over Qatar .

Benschop is married to the sports presenter Kamila Benschop , who was his interpreter in Düsseldorf. The couple have two children together. In honor of his father, who died at the age of 35, he preferably wears the shirt with the number 35 on his back .
