The district of Chavín is located in the Chincha province of the Ica region in southwestern Peru . The district founded on January 2, 1857 has an area of ​​427 km². At the 2017 census, 2110 people lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 735, in 2007 it was 1096. The district administration is located in the 3187  m high village of Chavín with 138 inhabitants (as of 2017). Chavín is located 45 km northeast of the provincial capital Chincha Alta .

Geographical location

The Chavín district is in the north of the Chincha province. The longitudinal extent in north-south direction is 32 km, the maximum width about 20 km. The district is located in the mountains of the Peruvian Western Cordillera .

The district of Chavín borders the districts of Chincha Alta and Pueblo Nuevo in the southwest , the district Lunahuaná ( province Cañete ) in the northwest , the districts Chocos , Azángaro (both in the province Yauyos ) and San Pedro de Huacarpana in the northeast and in the southeast the district of San Juan de Yanac .
