Carl Georg Christian Berger (born March 5, 1956 in Madrid ) is a German diplomat . He has been Ambassador to Cambodia since August 2019 . Before that, he had been Ambassador to Vietnam since January 2016 .

biography

After graduating from the Aloisius College in Bonn in 1974, he did his military service in the Bundeswehr and later became a lieutenant in the reserve . He then completed an apprenticeship as a banker at Commerzbank in Freiburg im Breisgau between 1976 and 1978 and then studied economics at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and the University of Cologne until 1983 . After completing his studies, he worked as a country officer in the Department of Economics at the German-South American Bank in Hamburg .

In 1986 he entered the diplomatic service and, after completing his training as an attaché, was initially a consultant for questions relating to the EC internal market and then from 1988 to 1990 a consultant for European Community (EC) matters in the office of Federal Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher . It was then used at the Embassy in Malaysia , from 1992 to 1993 at the Permanent Mission to NATO in Brussels and then until 1995 at the Permanent Mission to the European Union (EU) in Brussels.

After his return to Germany, between 1995 and 1999 he was personal assistant to the State Secretary in the Foreign Office, Hans-Friedrich von Ploetz . He then succeeded Ulrich Dreesen as ambassador in Laos and held this office from 2000 to 2004. He then returned to Germany and was Head of Department for Southeast Asia (Department 310) in the Foreign Office and thus also for Australia , New Zealand and responsible for the Pacific region.

From 2007 to 2010 Christian Berger was the successor of the retirement came Bernd Sproedt Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Ecuador . From 2010 he was the German ambassador in Baghdad before Brita Wagener took over this position in August 2012. Berger then worked at the Foreign Office in Berlin as a representative for foreign trade promotion. In January 2016, he presented his credentials as Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Vietnam . In July 2019, Guido Hildner succeeded him in this post and Berger moved to Cambodia as ambassador .
