William Jason "Jay" Reso (born November 30, 1973 in Kitchener , Ontario ), better known by his ring name Christian , is a former Canadian wrestler . He is currently under contract with the WWE and appeared regularly in their shows until March 2014.

One of his greatest successes so far was receiving the World Heavyweight Championship twice and the NWA World Heavyweight Championship .

Private

Reso has been very close friends with Adam Copeland since his youth , who later also became known in wrestling under the name Edge . Together they formed a tag team several times in their career. Reso is married to a German .

Wrestling career

Beginnings

Reso began his career in June 1995 in the Canadian wrestling promotion Apocalypse Wrestling Federation (AWF). He then initially worked for some independent leagues, where he gained his first professional experience.

World Wrestling Federation / Entertainment (1998-2005)

On September 27, 1998 he made his debut in the US wrestling league World Wrestling Federation (now WWE ). Reso won a match against Taka Michinoku for the WWF Light Heavyweight Championship at the WWE Judgment Day event in October.

He then formed a tag team with Edge . Together with Gangrel (David Heath) the "Brood" was created. After Gangrel split from the team, a feud with the Hardy Boyz began in 1999 , in which the Dudley Boyz were later involved. Among his most legendary appearances are the Tables, Ladders and Chairs Tag Team Matches , in which he competed with Edge against the two opposing teams. Overall, the team was able to win the WWF Tag Team Championship seven times.

The team was later disbanded and Reso had a feud against his former partner for the WWE Intercontinental Championship . On September 23, 2001 at Unforgiven he was able to win this title. At No Mercy on October 21, 2001 he lost the title back to Edge. Only nine days later in Smackdown he won by JBL the WWE European Championship . On January 29, 2002, he lost the SmackDown title to Diamond Dallas Page . From June 2002 Reso was a member of the table The Un-Americans , which consisted of Lance Storm , Test and William Regal . Together with Storm he won the WWE Tag Team Championship in July , but lost the title to The Hurricane and Kane .

Reso and Chris Jericho won the Tag Team Title again on October 14th. They lost the title to Booker T and Goldust on December 15, 2002. On May 18, 2003, he won the WWE Intercontinental Championship for the second time, which has just been revived. After losing the title on July 7, 2003 to Booker T, he won the title again on August 10, 2003, but lost it to Rob van Dam .

In December 2004 he got his current nickname Captain Charisma and from then on he often fought in the company of Tyson Tomko, whom Reso called his "problem solver".

In June 2005 Reso was sent to SmackDown as part of the line-up change. After his contract expired, he left the WWE on October 31, 2005, as no further cooperation could be agreed there. This is mainly because there were great ideas about his future career, but these were not implemented. He played his last match on October 30, 2005 with JBL against Rey Mysterio and Matt Hardy , and his last appearance was on November 1, 2005 on Taboo Tuesday .

Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (2005-2008, 2012)

On November 13, 2005 he made his debut at the TNA-PPV Genesis under the name Christian Cage . Since then, his path has led him ever further towards the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. In Against All Odds he was able to defeat the reigning champion Jeff Jarrett in February 2006 and win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. At Slammiversary in June 2006 he lost this title again.

On January 14, 2007, Christian Cage was able to regain the title by defeating Abyss and Sting in a Triple Threat Match. In mid-February of the same year, he lost the title to Kurt Angle . During his time at TNA Reso formed, among other things, the grouping Christian's Coalition , to which Tomko belonged, as in WWE times. His last appearance for TNA was in the TNA iMPACT! Issue on November 13, 2008.

As part of a deal with the WWE, in which Ric Flair despite TNA contract to the WWE Hall of Fame in 2012 , and at WrestleMania XXVIII, graduated Reso occurred a guest appearance at Slammiversary X .

Return to WWE (since 2009)

After his contract with TNA Wrestling expired, Reso returned to World Wrestling Entertainment. On February 10, 2009 he appeared there in the wrestling show ECW again under his ring name Christian .

On April 26th, Reso received the ECW Champion title after defeating Jack Swagger at the big event Backlash on April 26th, 2009. He had to cede this title to Tommy Dreamer on June 7, 2009 at the WWE major event Extreme Rules . At the night of Champions broadcast as a pay-per-view event on July 26, 2009, he defeated Tommy Dreamer in a title match to become ECW champion for the second time. After a feud against William Regal , Reso lost his title on February 16, 2010 on the very last ECW show to Ezekiel Jackson in an Extreme Rules match.

After the ECW was discontinued, Reso switched to RAW . There he played his first match against Carlito on February 22, 2010 and was able to qualify for the Money in the Bank Ladder Match. He also appeared on WWE NXT as a pro for Heath Slater .

Reso joined SmackDown on April 26, 2010 as part of the WWE Draft. After a chest muscle tear in September 2010, Reso was out for about half a year.

On February 20, 2011, he returned to the Pay-per-View Elimination Chamber . He then stood by his former tag team partner and best friend Edge in his match against Alberto Del Rio at WrestleMania XXVII . On May 1, 2011 Reso took the place of Edge, who had to end his career due to injury, in his ladder match at Extreme Rules , here too the opponent was Alberto Del Rio. In this match Reso was able to win the World Heavyweight Championship for the first time . However, he lost it to Randy Orton two days later on the SmackDown record . At the major event Money in the Bank on July 17, 2011, he won the title again. At SummerSlam on August 14, 2011, he lost the title to Randy Orton.

Due to an ankle injury he sustained in early November 2011, he was sidelined until he returned to the WWE Elimination Chamber on February 19, 2012. However, because his injury had not healed properly, he was put on another hiatus just before WrestleMania 28 before returning to Over the Limit on May 20, 2012. There he won first a Battle Royal and then the WWE Intercontinental Championship from Cody Rhodes . In the 1000th edition of RAW on July 23, 2012, Reso lost the title to The Miz . On January 28, 2014, Christian returned to WWE after an injury break in a match against Jack Swagger. On December 29, 2014 on RAW, Reso was declared resigned by commentator Jerry Lawler after not appearing on the shows for months. This decision is not due to him, but to the WWE itself, as they no longer want to let him compete due to several injuries. He played his last match on March 24, 2014 when he defeated Alberto Del Rio, Sheamus and Dolph Ziggler in a Fatal Four Way Match.

Outside of wrestling

In 2007, TNA Home Video released a DVD entitled The Instant Classic: Christian Cage, which covered from his beginnings in the Independent Leagues to his second NWA World Heavyweight Championship win and various other topics. Reso is also the host of The Ladder Match 2: Crash and Burn DVD. In September 2015, Edge and Christian were guests on the Steve Austin Podcast, which aired on the WWE Network . He was in most WWE video games from the WWE a playable character and appeared in TNA video game TNA Impact !.
