Scientific career

As part of an exchange program at the Universities of Bonn and Wisconsin ( United States of America ), Haehling von Lanzenauer was able to spend a year (1966 to 1967) as a postdoctoral fellow in Madison as a scholarship holder at the University of Wisconsin . There he worked closely with Howard E. Thompson, an endeavor that not only resulted in his first publications, but also resulted in a two-year (1967 to 1969) teaching position as an assistant professor at the Graduate School of Business. In 1969, Haehling von Lanzenauer accepted a faculty position in the Department for Management Science (now Analytics for Management) at the Ivey School of Business Administration at the University of Western Ontario in London , Canada . Scientific work

His scientific work, both in research and in teaching, is characterized by the focus on application: Business administration is an applied science. Problem orientation, practical relevance and the implementation of newer scientific approaches in analytics in operational reality are in the foreground. The central theme of his entire scientific work is to strengthen the white collar productivity of management. His work essentially falls into three main areas:

  • Multi-level production planning (intra-firm) and the associated topic of supply chain management (inter-firm). The first approaches come from his dissertation, in which the "back box" of the production apparatus was opened and the interdependencies of the individual production stages were optimally designed. An important result is the importance of interim storage, which can be absolutely necessary and optimal and thus represent a counterpoint to the Japanese philosophy of zero storage. This also applies to production systems in the service sector.
  • Risk management and insurance issues as well as dealing with uncertainty from the owner's perspective. Specific problems include the (optimal) behavior of the insured person in motor vehicle insurance after a claim has occurred, as well as the design of risk sharing arrangements (quota share and stop-loss arrangements) in group life and property insurance. The determination of safety stocks in storage systems is not only important from a theoretical point of view, but was also the basis for work in the natural gas distribution industry, whereby the uninterrupted supply of households and industrial companies with natural gas in a large region was in the foreground. His varied work on the subject of retirement income planning, especially from the point of view of the individual, is a fertile and always socio-politically topical area.
  • The imparting of knowledge and decision-making skills with interactive teaching and learning approaches as well as the development and use of real case studies, especially when analytical approaches and methods are in the foreground, run through his entire scientific work.

In addition to these main areas, Haehling von Lanzenauer also dealt with various questions of tourism management , human resources , strategic planning , e-learning , quality management and pricing as well as forecasts .
