Coat of Arms (dt. Wappen) is the fifth studio album by the Swedish heavy metal band Sabaton .

It was released on May 21, 2010. As on the Primo Victoria and Attero Domiatus albums , only the last song, Metal Ripper , deviates from the overall concept of the war theme.

General

Explanations of the pieces

Coat of Arms

The title song Coat of Arms is a description of the Greco-Italian War in 1941 and compares the Greek defenders with the hoplites in the battle of Thermopylae . The emphasis on Greek heroism is reinforced by a quote from Winston Churchill in the booklet of the album.

Screaming Eagles

Screaming Eagles is about the 101st Airborne Division during the Battle of the Bulge . This video, which was produced in a very complex and expensive manner, was published on May 25, 2011. The clip was preceded by several trailers and teasers at the end of 2010 . Most of the production shows intense, tenacious battles between US and Wehrmacht soldiers during the Battle of the Bulge. For the first time, CGI effects were also used.

Midway

Midway explains the Battle of Midway from the US perspective .

Uprising

Uprising is about the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. In the music video shot for this song, the actor Peter Stormare can be seen in the role of a German SS officer. This very elaborate production was documented by Polish television among others and celebrated its premiere there on August 1, 2010 on the anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising. In addition to the former Commander in Chief of the Polish Land Forces General Waldemar Skrzypczak as Gen. Antoni Chruściel and several actors known in Poland played the internationally known Swedish actor Peter Stormare as Erich von dem Bach-Zelewski .

The final solution

The slowest song on the album, The Final Solution , explains the final solution to the Jewish question in the Third Reich, beginning with Reichskristallnacht up to Auschwitz concentration camp . In a 2013 interview, bassist Sundström commented on the song as follows: “There were people who said after our first albums that Sabaton was a neo-Nazi band. In order to get rid of all such rumors, we said: All right, then we'll make a song precisely on this topic to get rid of such rumors. "

Aces in Exile

In Aces in Exile , the role is non-British pilots in the Royal Air Force in the air war in World War II highlighted.

Saboteurs

Saboteurs celebrates the sabotage of the Vemork hydroelectric power station in Rjukan ; see Norwegian heavy water sabotage .

Wehrmacht

Wehrmacht poses the question of the guilt of the Wehrmacht soldiers in the Second World War, without going into more precise historical events. In terms of music, Tobias Köhler from musikreviews.de sees parallels to Rammstein .

White Death

White Death is about the Finnish sniper Simo Häyhä , who shot more than 500 Red Army soldiers in the winter war against the Soviet Union .

Metal ripper

Metal Ripper consists of quoted or appropriately adopted text passages from various metal bars. Started with a guitar intro and the text "You're in for surprise, you're in for a shock" from the song The Ripper by Judas Priest passages were of Metallica ( "twisting your mind and smashing your dreams, blinded by me you can 't see a thing ” from Master of Puppets ), Iron Maiden ( “ Torches blazed and sacred chants were praised ” from Number of the Beast ), Yngwie Malmsteen ( “ hear a rising force ” from Rising Force ), Queen ( “ blood on your face, you big disgrace “ freely taken from We Will Rock You ) and many others.

Reviews

Michael Edele wrote for laut.de : “Accordingly, Sabaton stay true to their last and do what they do best - albeit slightly refined and more to the point: dance, mosh and sing along epic power steel with melodies for millions. A pinch of kitsch can appear in some heroic vocal parts, but that rounds off the package. Hymns such as the opener and title track inspired by the '300' flick, the pounding 'Midway', the 'Uprising' that pays homage to the Warsaw Uprising, the live club 'Aces In Exile' or the Auschwitz memorial 'The Final Solution' not only show musical variety but stand out from the lyrical regular table level of many other troops of this variety. A title like 'Wehrmacht' is a hot topic, but the attitude with which the Scandinavians approach the matter should have long been clear. Sabaton are clearly on the move into the top division of heavy metal, which is not only proven by chart entries all over Europe. With Hammerfall they should soon be at eye level. "

The editors of metal.de gave the album an average of 7.7 out of 10 points. Christian K. even awarded nine points: “The difficult topic that is dealt with here has been wrapped in what I believe to be a suitable, slow, heavy musical coat that, as so often, culminates in a chorus that invites you to sing along. SABATON hit the nerve of the fans with 'Coat Of Arms'. Gripping Heavy Metal with a lot of power and impact. ”He wrongly placed the title track in the Persian Wars .

In the Encyclopaedia Metallum , the album received an average rating of 66% out of seven reviews.
