Constantin Dumitru

Constantin Dumitru (born November 11, 1935 in the Kingdom of Romania ; † December 17, 1996 in Düsseldorf ) was a Romanian opera singer ( bass / bass baritone ).

Life

Dumitru studied singing at the State Music Conservatory in Bucharest . He made his debut as an opera singer in 1954 at the Bucharest State Opera as Figaro in Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia . He then initially worked on various stages in Romania. In January 1969 he sang the role of Colline in La Bohème at the Bucharest State Opera . In 1969 he left Romania and came to Germany. He had his first permanent engagement in Germany from 1969 to 1971 at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe .

In 1971 he became a permanent member of the ensemble at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf / Duisburg , to which he belonged for over 25 years until his death. There he sang an “extensive repertoire” from the bass, bass buffo and bass baritone subject and was “versatile”. His roles in Düsseldorf / Duisburg included a. a. the Hermit in Der Freischütz (new production in the 1984/85 season, director: Otto Schenk ), Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte (including the 1988/89 season), Doctor Bartolo in Le nozze di Figaro (including the 1993/94 season in a new production ), Masetto in Don Giovanni (including the 1986/87 season), Mustafa in Die Italienerin in Algier , Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola (including the 1987/88 season), the title role in Don Pasquale , Don Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia by Giovanni Paisiello (including the 1987/88 season), Zaccaria in Nabucco (1979/80 season), Don Bartolo in The Barber of Seville by Gioacchino Rossini, Count Monterone in Rigoletto (including the 1979/80 season, resumption), King in Aida (among others "With balanced lines" in a new production in Düsseldorf, director: Pet Halmen , in the 1989/90 season; this role later again in the 1992/93 season), Colline in La Bohème (including 1985/86 and 1992/93 season), Angelotti in Tosca (resumption hme in April 1980, with "safe voice guidance"), alternately also the sacristan in Tosca (u. a. in October 1986 in Duisburg under Siegfried Köhler and in May 1989 in a gala performance with Mara Zampieri and Peter Dvorsky ), Lieutenant Zuniga in Carmen (including the 1986/87 season) and Titurel in Parsifal . Some of these roles, such as Monterone and Titurel, he sang for decades.

Dumitru also sang many smaller roles, such as the caretaker of Orest in Elektra (premiere: January 1981), the village judge in Jenůfa (premiere: January 1983), the doctor in Pelléas et Mélisande (premiere: June 1981, Duisburg), Mathieu in Andrea Chénier ( inter alia in the revivals in December 1984 and May 1986), Dottore Grenvil in La traviata (premiere: February 1986 in Duisburg), the night watchman in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (premiere: May 1986), Venuzzi in Die Schweigsame Frau (including the 1987 season / 88) and Don Fernando in Fidelio (including the 1992/93 season in Düsseldorf).

In the season 1987/88 he appeared at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Duisburg as Küfermeister Krönkel in the opera Schneider Wibbel . In the 1989/90 season in May 1990 he sang the role of Douglas d'Angus in a concert performance of the rarely performed Rossini opera La donna del lago at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf . In June 1991 he took on the role of the servant Balthasar in concert performances of the opera Genoveva at the Robert Schumann Festival in Düsseldorf . In the 1991/92 season he appeared at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liege as the “sonorous” Berengario in a concert performance of the largely unknown Rossini opera Adelaide di Borgogna . In the 1991/92 season he sang General Polkan in the opera Der goldene Hahn at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein (director: Pet Halmen ; premiere in Duisburg in December 1991 / premiere in Düsseldorf in March 1992); in the Duisburg premiere he “impressed” with “a powerful timbre and beautiful vocal line”. In the 1992/93 season he was Lord Gualtiero Valton in concert performances of I puritani (1992/93 season, premiere: December 1992 in Düsseldorf and January 1993 in Duisburg).

In the 1996/97 season he appeared again in December 1996 as General Polkan in the opera Der goldene Hahn . A few days before his death, in December 1996, he sang the role of Doctor Bartolo in Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia . For the new production of the opera Il trovatore in Duisburg in December 1996, Dumitru was cast for the role of Ferrando. However, he collapsed dead after a stroke during one of the last rehearsals on stage and died at the age of 61.

Dumitru has made guest appearances at the Bavarian State Opera , the Hamburg State Opera , the Cologne Opera (including in March 1988 as König in Aida ) and at the Frankfurt Opera as well as in Budapest , Paris , Bordeaux , Zurich , Bogotà and Tokyo .

For the record Dumitru took on the Romanian record label Electrecord u. a. the Baron Douphol in La Traviata (1968; with Virginia Zeani , Ion Buzea and Nicolae Herlea as partners), the Ferrando in Il Trovatore and the Abimélech in Samson et Dalila (1970; with Elena Cernei and Ludovic Spiess as partners). In May 1981 he also appeared on Radio France in a live recording of the opera Matilde di Shabran by Gioacchino Rossini in the role of Raimondo.
