Cornelius Springer (l. Cornelis Springer ) (born May 25, 1817 in Amsterdam , † February 18, 1891 in Hilversum ) was a Dutch painter , etcher and lithographer . He was an important architecture and vedute painter .

biography

Springer was the fourth son of the carpenter William Springer (1778-1857). He received training from the painter Andries de Wit (1768–1842) and learned from his older brother, the architect Henry Springer (1805–1867), how to draw architecture and perspective. He then studied with Jacobus van der Stok (1795–1864), Hendrik Gerrit ten Cate (1803–1856) and Kaspar Karsen (1810–1896).

On his numerous trips through Europe - often in Germany - he painted the views of the cities, the squares, the houses and the landscapes . He was among others in Westphalia , Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein .

In 1863 he came to Bremen . Here he made sketches , watercolors and pictures of buildings and of the Bremen market square . The works exhibited in the Kunsthalle Bremen were lost. His picture of the market square, made in 1864, ended up permanently in the Bremen Kunsthalle via the collection of the merchant Hermann Henrich Meier junior in 1919 and is now widely distributed thanks to color prints. The charcoal drawing Lange Wieren (a street) with the St. Johanneskirche Bremen from 1864 was the basis of one of his oil paintings, which has been exhibited in the Focke Museum since 1967 .

Springer painted many cities and villages in the Romantic style , often also fantasies with recognizable motifs. His paintings are topographically accurate. The detail and the light were pronounced with him. His works are not only exact, but also harmonious in terms of color and lighting. They were widely used by many color prints. In the Netherlands his works from Amsterdam , Haarlem , Zwolle , Kampen , Enkhuizen , Monnickendam and Harderwijk are well known.

His painting Blick auf den Westen Straße von Enkhuizen was auctioned in 2006 by the auction house Sotheby’s in Amsterdam and brought in 1.1 million euros, the highest sum that was paid for one of his works.

His son Leonard Springer (1855–1940) was one of the most important landscape architects in Dutch gardening in the 19th and 20th centuries.
