Cottage Grove is located in south-central Wisconsin, in the eastern suburbs of its capital, Madison . The intersection of the three states of Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois is located on the Mississippi and is 163 km to the west-southwest.

Cottage Grove is the eastern terminus of a branch line of the Union Pacific Railroad . From there, the eastern extension of the Glacial Drumlin State Trail , a rail trail for hikers and cyclists, runs on a former railway line of the Chicago and North Western Railway . In winter, the hiking trail can also be used with snowmobiles.
