Reviews

  • Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of April 28, 1989 that film writers were too often using false alarms . It works twice in a film, in this one it would be used six or seven times; especially often in the last half hour. These " tricks " would ruin the good representations of Gary Oldman and Kevin Bacon. Bacon plays " very effective " because he represents a " engaging young man " with a deeply hidden mental illness.
  • Hal Hinson wrote in the Washington Post on April 28, 1989 that the essence of the film is the relationship between the main characters trying to manipulate one another. The representations are " skillful ", they suggest a " deeper psychological dimension ". The director creates tension in an effective way. The plot, however, is " less and less credible ".
