Daniel Wilhelm Moller (also: Müller, Raimund Rimand * 26. May 1642 in Bratislava ; † 25. February 1712 in Altdorf ) was a born in Hungary German polymath .

Life

The son of goldsmith and jeweler Otto Möller and his wife Rebekka (née Berghammer) had studied language in Bohemia and attended high school in his hometown. In 1660 he traveled through Austria, Moravia, Bohemia and Saxony. In Saxony he moved to the University of Leipzig , from there in 1661 he moved to the University of Wittenberg , where he was accepted into the house of Johann Andreas Quenstedt . He completed his initial philosophical and theological studies with Aegidius Strauch II , Johannes Meisner , Abraham Calov and Christian Trentsch (1605–1677), among others .

He earned a master's degree in philosophy in October 1662 and was appointed Poeta laureatus . In 1663 he traveled to Holland, England, Silesia, Prussia and Poland and in 1664 came to the University of Strasbourg , where he continued his theological studies. Here he attended lectures with Johann Conrad Dannhauer , Balthasar Bebel and Balthasar Scheidt (1614–1670) and learned the French language. After giving lectures in Strasbourg himself, he worked as a tutor in Colmar and then went on trips to Switzerland, France and Italy.

In 1670 Moller returned to Pressburg and in 1671 became sub-principal at the grammar school in his home town. During this time, however, people who belonged to the Protestant faith were persecuted in Hungary. As he was subject to reprisals himself, he fled to Germany. Here he was offered tasks in a wide variety of places, which he largely turned down. Finally he came to Nuremberg, where in 1674 he was appointed professor of history and metaphysics. Moller had taken over the position of librarian at the University of Altdorf from his father-in-law Wagenseil , was in close contact with Philipp Jacob Spener , and in the course of his university career he received a lot of recognition for his work.

In 1693 he was appointed Count Palatine by Emperor Leopold , in Italy he was appointed to the Accademia dei Ricovrati (Societas Recuperatorum) in Padua, in Germany to the Academy of Natural Scientists (Leopoldina) , and he was accepted into the Society of Imperial Historians. Moller also took part in the organizational tasks of the Altdorf University of Applied Sciences , was twice rector of the alma mater and ten times dean of the philosophical faculty.

Moller has married twice. His first marriage was in 1685 with Anna Sybilla Braun, who however died childless in 1691. His second marriage was in October 1692 with the learned Helena Sibylla (* June 16, 1669; † September 29, 1735), the only daughter of Johann Christoph Wagenseil . This marriage also remained childless.
