Daniela Jutzeler (born April 14, 1967 in Glarus ; † August 5, 1994 in Littau ) was a Swiss athlete . The racing wheelchair user rode from short, medium and long distances to marathons .

Life

Daniela Jutzeler was the second of three children of Doris and Paul Jutzeler to be born in Glarus. At that time the family was running a butcher's shop in Näfels . The family later moved to Littau. As a teenager, Daniela Jutzeler did a lot of sports such as horse riding, skiing and water sports. Her life partner was the teacher, journalist and pilot Bruno Schaller .

Paraplegia

On April 5, 1985, an accident occurred while Daniela Jutzeler was preparing for a family ski trip. In her memoir, she described the moment: “I took the ski suit out of my parents' closet. A light rifle was propped against the back wall. The rifle gets caught on the trigger and falls to the ground. When picked up, a jammed shot is released with a shrill bang. I feel a stabbing pain, scream and suddenly fall to the ground. "

The bullet shot through her lungs and hit the spinal cord. Daniela Jutzeler has been paraplegic since then and spent her life as a paraplegic in a wheelchair.

rehabilitation

After the first treatment of the life-threatening injuries in the Canton Hospital Lucerne and the Canton Hospital Aarau, she was transferred to the Paraplegic Center in Basel. It was treated by Guido A. Zäch , among others . He remained a mentor and sponsor for many years. She supported his medical, social and political struggle in Switzerland for equality for disabled people in wheelchairs and thus the model of holistic rehabilitation.

Others

Daniela Jutzeler spent the winter months in her house in New Port Richey near Tampa . Together with her partner Bruno Schaller, she founded the quarterly magazine “Go ahead”, which was published by the Swiss Paraplegic Association . She earned her further living with prize money from races, as a works driver for the wheelchair company Top End, by sponsoring the Lucerne company Numis and as a columnist for the Neue Luzerner Zeitung .

Deadly accident

Daniela Jutzeler died on August 5, 1994 on her training route between Littau and Malters when she was run over by a delivery truck. Today's tomb in Littau was created by the paraplegic artist Alfredo Battistini . It bears the inscription "Amigos Para Siempre".

After her death, Franz Nietlispach, Heinz Frei and Erwin Zemp, together with Daniela Jutzeler's parents, founded the "Daniela Jutzeler Foundation" to promote young wheelchair athletes. Since then, a "Daniela Jutzeler Memorial" has been held alternately in Ibach , Pratteln and Nottwil every year in the form of an international, full-day and homologated rail meeting.
