Pratteln ( Swiss German Brattele [ ˈbʀɑtːələ ]) is a municipality in the Liestal district of the Swiss canton of Basel-Landschaft .
geography
Pratteln is 298 m above sea level. M., bounded in the north by the Rhine ( border between Germany and Switzerland ) and in the south by the Gempenplateau and the Adlerberg . The community also includes the Schweizerhalle industrial area and part of the large Basel-Muttenz marshalling yard . The neighboring communities of Pratteln are Augst , Füllinsdorf , Frenkendorf , Muttenz , Gempen in Solothurn and Grenzach-Wyhlen in Germany on the northern bank of the Rhine .
history
Pratteln was settled very early; Remains from the Middle and New Stone Age were found , such as the at least 120,000 year old hand ax from Pratteln , as well as the Iron Age , for example Celtic burial mounds, foundations of Roman estates and grave finds from the early Middle Ages .
The place name goes back to the late Romanesque * pradella "small meadow", a diminutive of the Latin prātum "meadow". Since the place name only partially took part in the second sound shift (the later shift from Germanic / d / to Old High German / t /, but not the earlier shift from / p / to / pf /), one can deduce that the place has been for a long time formed a Romance language island in the midst of the immigrating Alemanni and the language change probably only took place in the 8th or 9th century.
In 1102 or 1103 the name Brattelo appears for the first time as the courtyard of the St. Alban monastery in Basel and in 1250 the church of Bratelle was mentioned in a Basel document. Pratteln was owned by the Eptinger family for almost 200 years. The Eptinger castles on Madeln and in the village were destroyed in the great Basel earthquake of 1356 . In 1476 the village received from the German Emperor Friedrich III. perpetual tax exemption and the right to hold a market from October 1st to 3rd every year.
In 1521 the Eptinger property was sold to the city of Basel and Pratteln became federal .
During the turmoil of separation between the cantons , in which Pratteln was on the side of the countryside, the village was partially destroyed on August 3, 1833 by the troops of the city of Basel. The three-storey rebuilt farmhouses on the main street opposite the Hotel Engel and in the outskirts are witnesses of the destruction. On June 7, 1837, the saline Schweizerhalle began to extract brine , which marked the beginning of industrialization for the village.

Economy and Transport
Pratteln is a typical suburb of Basel . A lot of industry has settled, but the community in the village center and also in the southern part is very keen to be considered a residential community with a high quality of life. With just over 15,000 inhabitants, it is already a small town and has one of the highest rates of foreigners in the whole of the canton of Baselland , especially in the slab-building districts of Längi and Rankacker .
Pratteln has a motorway connection to the A2 towards Basel (Germany / France) and Mittelland (Lucerne, Gotthard, Zurich, Bern). The SBB lines Basel– Olten and Basel – Zurich run through Pratteln ; however, almost all S-Bahn trains on lines S1 and S3 stop there . In addition, Pratteln has been connected to Basel by tram line 14 since 1922 . In 2004, the Pratteln train station was expanded and modernized to be barrier-free and the number of lockers increased. With the timetable change in December 2008, Pratteln received another S-Bahn stop with Pratteln Salina Raurica .
Hardwasser AG is also located in the municipality of Pratteln . A traditional company in Pratteln was the steel construction company Albert Buss & Cie. on the site of today's Buss industrial park.
Pratteln is also known nationwide for the Z7 concert factory, which hosts a large number of rock and metal events and publishes its own magazine every quarter. A closure in 2014 in favor of a hardware store was averted. The Migros Basel cooperative has been trying to set up an Obi hardware store on the site since 2005 .
