action

In 1997 research is being carried out into a possible control of the weather. The technical equipment for this is on board the Florida Arklab space station , which is operated jointly by the United States and Europe. There, the two astronauts Max Marek and Billy Hayes explore the possibilities of influence with microwaves on climate and weather patterns on Earth. When a revolution breaks out in Saudi Arabia, the weather control technology is said to be abused for military purposes. Control of the civil station is taken over by the American military. The effect of the microwave radiation is used as a cloak for US armed forces against satellite-based reconnaissance and is intended to hide a military intervention by the United States in Saudi Arabia from the UN . The two astronauts Hayes and Marek discover this and try to prevent further use, as the irradiation of the affected regions is very likely to lead to serious natural disasters. This will damage the station's reactor system .

After the sabotage of the system, the two astronauts Eva Thompson and Gregor Vandenberg should enable further use of the system. As a replacement, you will come on board the space station with the Space Shuttle Maryland . Gregor is authorized to enforce the orders of the military by force, Eva is supposed to exert influence on Max through her relationship with Max. Gregor has been ordered to carry out another radiation treatment for military reasons, and he is under massive pressure from the military to carry it out. Max tries to stop him and is badly wounded with gunshots by Gregor. However, when the microwave emitters are used again, a core meltdown occurs in the already damaged reactor system . Gregor dies trying to leave the station. Max dies from serious gunshot wounds in Eva's arms. Billy and Eva can save themselves with the space shuttle before the space station is destroyed.

Billy reports the whole story to his superior Felix Kronenberg in an interrogation on earth. He then tells him that the monsoons set in early due to the microwave irradiation in India and that this led to gigantic floods. The number of victims is very large. Then Eva and Billy are taken away by soldiers. Shortly thereafter, Felix heard on the news that the two allegedly died of radiation damage they suffered during the disaster in the station. He then destroys the recordings of the interrogation.

Trivia

The location of the film was the disused Concordia washing machine factory in Maichingen .

criticism

"Measured against its modest budget - a technically astonishing science fiction film that cannot deny its role models and suffers from clichés and home-made dialogues."
