Deadlock ( English for “standstill”, “blocking”, “system blockade”) is a five-piece German melodic death metal band whose members come from Regensburg , Jena and Berlin . All members live vegan and clearly represent this way of life in their texts.

style

In their music, the band combines the filigree guitar playing typical of the style from classic metal with rhythm elements from more extreme death metal trends. Keyboards, synthesizers and sequencers are often used as supporting instruments. The vocals are dominated by a constant change between hard growls from singer John Gahlert and clear, melodic hooklines from singer Margie Gerlitz. The band describes their style as “mixture of technical, melodic metal with the harsh atmospheric nature of today's modern sounds”. On their last albums, Deadlock are also open to non-genre influences, such as: B. half-minute excursions into techno or hip-hop realms or trance remixes of selected songs.

history

Deadlock was founded in 1997 by Tobias Graf, Sebastian Reichl and Johannes Prem as a pure death metal band. After a first self-titled 7 "record, the band first found coverage in the music press in 2000 after the EP I'll Wake You When Spring Awakes was released via Winter Recordings. The underground label also released their debut album The Arrival , on which keyboards and synthesizers could be heard for the first time. Also for the first time clear, female vocals were integrated into the sound by Sabine Scherer, who was initially only represented as a guest singer.

Parallel to the split CD with Six Reasons to Kill , the band signed a multi-album contract with Lifeforce Records , where a short time later the second album Earth.Revolt was released. A little later, Sabine Scherer was integrated as a permanent member of the band. In 2007, the third album Wolves was released , and live shows and festivals were held for promotional purposes, including a European tour (as support for Neaera ), the Summer Breeze Festival and the Metalcamp Festival in Slovenia. On December 28, 2007, the band celebrated their tenth anniversary with an anniversary concert in the Gloria film theater in Regensburg.

In 2008 the CD Manifesto was released and the band extended their contract with Lifeforce Records. The band split from bassist Thomas Huschka due to personal and musical differences. The Manifesto promotion tour with The Haunted and All That Remains was completed with Bartosz Wojciechowski from Fear My Thoughts as a guest musician.

In April 2009 the band announced John Gahlert (formerly Fall of Serenity ) as their new bassist on their official website . Furthermore, the band played u. a. at the With Full Force Festival, the ProRock Festival in Ukraine and the Summer Breeze Festival. After the successful publication of the CD Manifesto in Japan and Russia, promotional appearances were also carried out there. In December 2009 Deadlock took part in the Darkness over X-Mas tour with Dark Tranquility , Swashbuckle , Caliban and Heaven Shall Burn .

In February 2010 Deadlock toured Germany on the "Shallow Life Tour" as support for Lacuna Coil . In May 2010, Sebastian Reichl and Sabine Scherer made guest appearances on the hit album Invictus the band Heaven Shall Burn in the song "Given In Death". In addition to numerous concerts at home and abroad, Deadlock was most recently the opening act for the Swedish metal band Sonic Syndicate on their tour “We rule the night”.

In February 2011 the fifth studio album Bizarro World was released , which reached number 61 in the German album charts . The band first went on their first own headlining tour and then toured again in Germany in support of Ill Niño . The band was also represented again at the Summer Breeze Festival, the With Full Force Festival and, for the first time, at the Wacken Open Air . In October 2011, Johannes Prem announced that he would be leaving by mutual agreement on the grounds that he could no longer devote the necessary time to Deadlock. The band then announced their new line-up in November 2011. The vocals were taken over by John Gahlert, who was previously responsible for bass, and the previous tour manager Ferdinand Rewicki replaces him on bass. The new line up appeared for the first time as part of a co-headlining tour with Lake of Tears in late 2011.

In April 2012 Deadlock went on their second headlining tour through Europe with the same line-up, together with The Unguided , and then co-headlined with Nightrage in the opening act of Demon Hunter on their “True Defiance Tour”. On February 8, 2013, guitarist Gert Rymen announced on the official Facebook page that he had left the band. He justified this by saying that he wanted to spend more time with his family and devote more time to his professional activity.

At the end of June 2013, the band announced that bassist Ferdinand Rewicki would from now on play the second guitar. On July 26th, 2013 the band released their new album called The Arsonist , which was released through Napalm Records .

At the end of April 2014, founding member and drummer Tobias Graf left the band because he was no longer able to continue playing in the band for personal and professional reasons. Graf died on September 2, 2014 after a serious illness.
