Debbie Gibson (2009)

Deborah Ann "Debbie" Gibson (born August 31, 1970 in New York City ) is an American singer , actress and songwriter who had some hits, especially in the 1980s.

Life

Debbie Gibson was born in Brooklyn and grew up on Long Island in Merrick , a district of Hempstead, the third of four daughters of Joseph and Diane Gibson. She was on stage with her sister at the age of five and wrote her first songs. At this age she also taught herself to play the piano. According to her mother, she played by ear and only later learned to read music from a piano teacher. At eight she was a member of the Metropolitan Opera Choir in New York, and at twelve she starred in the lead role of Annie in the musical of the same name on Broadway .

At the age of 16 she received her first record deal with Atlantic Records and was able to place her first self-written hits in the charts worldwide from mid-1987: Only in My Dreams and Shake Your Love . Other hits followed, including her US number one hits Foolish Beat (1988) and Lost in Your Eyes (1989). With her second album Electric Youth , released in early 1989, and the hit single of the same name, as well as the singles No More Rhyme and We Could Be Together , she was also successful in Europe and Japan.

In 1992 she gave a three-month guest appearance in the Broadway production Les Misérables as Eponine. In 1993, then her breakthrough as a musical star in Grease in London's West End , where she appeared in the lead role next to the former neighbor actor Craig McLachlan took over the role of Sandy. This was followed by leading roles in the Broadway productions Funny Girl , Beauty and the Beast , Gypsy , Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat , Cinderella , Chicago and Cabaret .

In the meantime she devoted herself to music and released various albums. There were also several appearances in some television productions, including the series Beverly Hills, 90210 and roles in films such as My Girlfriend's Boyfriend and Teen Queen , for which she also wrote the film music. Deborah Gibson has had her own record label called Golden Egg Productions since the mid-1990s, where she not only produces other singers, but also writes songs for them. Her mother Diane is still her manager. She was also in the trash films Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus (2009, directed by Jack Perez) and Mega Python vs. Gatoroid (2011, directed by Mary Lambert ). 2011 Gibson appeared in the music video Last Friday Night (TGIF) by Katy Perry on as their mother.

In 2015 and 2016 she was seen as the leading actress in two films with a musical framework on US television: The Music in Me and Summer of Dreams each also offered new songs by Gibson. A sequel to Summer of Dreams followed in September 2018 with Wedding of Dreams .

In April 2018 Gibson was honored with a star on the "Palm Springs Walk of Stars".
