The Deiseler tunnel , also Trendelburg tunnel or Carl railway tunnel called, near Deisel in North Hessian Kassel district is a 202 m long, one-time railway tunnel of Carl web . Built between 1846 and 1847, it is the oldest railway tunnel in Hesse . The tunnel and its caretaker's house are cultural monuments according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act . Biking and hiking trails have been running through the tunnel since 2014.

The Deiseler Tunnel is located around 1.1 km (as the crow flies ) east of Deisel , a north-north-west district of Trendelburg . It passes under the partly wooded Kesselberg , which is a west-north -westerly slope spur of the Brautstein ( 209.4  m above sea  level ) belonging to the Reinhardswald and is surrounded by a loop of the Diemel to the west ; the river runs near the tunnel at a height of at least 112  m .

The length of the 202 m long Deiseler Tunnel is sometimes given as 264 m. The then single-track tunnel is slightly arched, 6.05 m high and 4.60 m wide. Its overburden is around 20 m within the Kesselberg . With a minimal incline, the tunnel is located at distance kilometers  7.6 of the Carlsbahn at a height of around 120  m .

The Deiseler Tunnel is named after the Deisel district of Trendelburg , which is opposite the tunnel on the other bank of the river. It was built from 1846 to 1847: construction of the stamped concrete began on April 23, 1846, the vault was lined from August 1846 , and the tunnel was completed on June 1, 1847; on the other hand, on the plaque of the builder, the construction period February 1846 to June 1847 can be read. The builder was the construction company Conrad Siebrecht from Kassel . The difficulty in building the tunnel was the excavation of the hard rock. On the other hand, underpinning and stiffening of the mountains in front of the walling, which was done with bricks , was not necessary . The abutments are made of sandstone . The tunnel curves slightly to the west. The north portal is made of brick and decorated on both sides with a pilaster , a frieze and a crowning parapet . The south portal is faced with sandstone.

The associated tunnel keeper's house north of the tunnel , a type construction from 1849, has been preserved. Together with the Carlsbahn, the facility was put into operation in 1848 and decommissioned as a railway tunnel in 1986.

In 2005, plans began to run cycling and hiking trails through the Deiseler Tunnel during the warmer months of the year. At that time, the Hessischer Radfernweg R4 and Diemelradweg cycle paths as well as the Märchenlandweg and Eco path Diemel walked around 1.8 km at the west foot of the Brautstein to the west around the Kesselberg and thus past the tunnel. From the shared cycle and hiking route, branch paths ran to the south and north portal of the tunnel, so that cyclists and pedestrians could only reach the tunnel but not drive through it; the branch path to the south portal was opened on September 4, 2013, the one to the north portal with the information board for the Diemel Eco path was opened in 2010. While the north part of the tunnel could only be accessed over a length of around 20 m for the time being, all of the rest was cordoned off.

From 2010 to 2012 the tunnel was partially protected as a historical monument and in 2011 the portals were renovated. It was originally planned to open it as a cycle touring and hiking tunnel around the end of August 2014 after the completion of further renovation and conversion work, but this did not happen until September 12, 2014. Because of the western part of the nature reserve Holzape valley will continue to drive around in front of the south portal has the former railway embankment there on a few hundred meters in length / -gangen.

Every year the tunnel is closed from November 1st to March 31st because it then serves as a hibernation for bats .
