Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax is an arcade - fighting game that by Ecole Software and French Bread developed by video game publisher SEGA was published on March 18, 2014. The game was programmed to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Dengeki Bunko by publisher ASCII Media Works and contains characters from various light novels published by the publisher .

The game was implemented for the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation Vita in Japan on November 13, 2014. A version for the western market was released in North America and Europe in October 2015. Belief by the musician Mami Kawada was selected as the theme song .

The video game was reissued in July 2015 as Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax Ignition , which has additional characters and a more balanced gameplay. It was also released for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in December 2015 . For the new edition, singer LiSA contributed the song ID .

Gameplay

Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax is a fighting game with 2D graphics in which two players compete against each other with one playable and one support character. The combat system has three attack buttons: weak, medium and strong, each together with a summoning button, with which you can summon the previously selected support character. When a player summons a support character, it must wait until the summoning bar is fully charged before the support character can be summoned again. By raising the Climax bar the player can perform special attacks; Through the use of blast points, blast attacks can also be used, with which one can, for example, avoid opposing combined attacks. The home game version contains an original story campaign mode, a Dream Duel story, an online multiplayer and supports cross-media functions such as saving files between the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 3 versions of the game. Excerpts from the light novel series represented in the game are implemented as unlockable content in the game.

In the new edition of the game there is a slot for a second support character, which can only be used for blast attacks. With Ignition , a new system has also been introduced that gives a character on each team a power-up after each round . From the second round it is possible to use Ignition Extra if the player uses the same Ignition from the previous round.

Characters

The original version of the game features 12 playable and 18 non-playable support characters from 22 different light novels . The new edition of the game contains 19 playable characters and 30 non-playable support characters from the Dengeki Bunko universe. Most of the characters are voiced by the original voice actors on the respective anime TV series, with a few exceptions. Denshin , a non-playable character, is based on a character from the Dreamcast game Sega Hard Girls and summons playable characters who intervene to support the fight against an evil being from the organization Zetsumu - from the game Dengeki Gakuen RPG: Cross of Venus . This is able to take the form of a trapped character. The boss characters Akira Yuki and Pai Chan from SEGA's Virtua Fighter series became playable characters on the console versions and from version 1.2 on the arcade version of the game.

In the middle of 2014 eight more characters, four of them playable and four support, were included in the game. Selvaria Bles and Alicia Melchiott from Valkyria Chronicles were two more characters from the SEGA universe that were added to the game, along with other characters from the Dengeki Bunko family.

The music used in the game is partly based on other SEGA games such as Sonic the Hedgehog , Nights into Dreams ... , Shinobi , Border Break , Valkyria Chronicles , 7th Dragon and Phantasy Star Online 2 . Yuuki and support character Llenn from the Sword Art Online franchise were made available as DLC on December 25, 2015 . With Ako and her support character Rusian from And you thought there is never a girl online? Two more DLC characters followed a little later.

reception

The online game magazine Hardcore Gamer awarded four out of five possible stars and described the game as a "love letter to all anime and SEGA fans". In contrast, PlayStation Lifestyle rated the video game with only 5.5 out of ten possible points, describing Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax as a solid fighting game, which, however, does not focus on gameplay and thus keeps newcomers away from the fun.

The game also received mixed reviews at Destructoid . It is described as "too simple for fighting game lovers, but at the same time too complex for those who have found the genre too intimidating".

In the first week, the PlayStation 3 version of the game sold around 35,000 times in Japan and placed sixth on the video game charts, while the PlayStation Vita version of the game sold almost 26,000 times within the first week and placed ninth Started.
