The Passauer Neue Presse (PNP) is a regional newspaper of the Verlagsgruppe Passau GmbH (VGP) based in Passau . It was founded in 1946 by Johannes Kapfinger , who was editor-in-chief at Straubinger Tagblatt until 1933 . The first edition appeared on February 5, 1946. With its local editions, the newspaper achieved a sold circulation of 153,981 copies, a decrease of 14.9 percent since 1998.
Along with the Mittelbayerische Zeitung and the Straubinger Tagblatt / Landshuter Zeitung, it is the third daily newspaper to be published in Eastern Bavaria and is produced in the Passau printing center , which is also part of the PNP.
The editor-in-chief has been the former deputy editor-in-chief Ernst Fuchs since March 1, 2009. Deputy editors-in-chief are Alexander Kain and Martin Wanninger.
Distribution area
Distribution area is mainly the eastern and southeastern Lower Bavaria and the Altötting district in Upper Bavaria . The Straubing / Landshut / Kelheim area is not part of the distribution area.
The PNP appears with a total of 20 local editions:
- In the city of Passau: the city edition of the Passauer Neue Presse
- The district edition of the Passauer Neue Presse for the district of Passau , also for Pocking , Hauzenberg and Untergriesbach .
- For Osterhofen : the Osterhofener newspaper .
- For Plattling : the Plattlinger Zeitung .
- In the Altötting / Neuötting area (Upper Bavaria): Alt-Neuöttinger Anzeiger .
- In the southern district of Altötting and around Burghausen : Burghauser Anzeiger ; this edition forms the southernmost flank towards Upper Bavaria.
- In the area around Grafenau ( Freyung-Grafenau district ): Grafenauer Anzeiger .
- In Regen (city) , Zwiesel and in Viechtach : The Bayerwald-Bote or the Viechtacher Bayerwald-Bote .
- In the Bad Füssing and Bad Griesbach triangle with the main town of Pocking : Passauer Neue Presse (Pocking / Griesbach edition).
- For the Altlandkreis Pfarrkirchen : Passauer Neue Presse (edition Pfarrkirchen / Simbach)
- For the Altlandkreis Eggenfelden : the Rottaler Anzeiger .
- In the Deggendorfer area: the Deggendorfer Zeitung .
- In the western district of Passau and in the eastern district of Deggendorf : the Vilshofener Anzeiger .
- Between Dingolfing and Landau an der Isar : Landauer Neue Presse .
- In the northern district of Traunstein : Trostberger Tagblatt and Traunreuter Anzeiger as well as Südostbayerische Rundschau .
- Middle and north of the district of Berchtesgadener Land : Reichenhaller Tagblatt and Freilassinger Anzeiger as well as Südostbayerische Rundschau .
It is a monopoly newspaper almost everywhere, so the only newspaper with a local section. Only in the Plattling / Landau an der Isar area and Deggendorf does the distribution area overlap with local editions of the Straubinger Tagblatt . In the Altötting district there is also competition from the local edition of the Upper Bavarian Volksblatt (Münchner Merkur) .
Edition
The Passauer Neue Presse , like most German newspapers in recent years to rest lost. The circulation sold has decreased by an average of 1% per year over the past 10 years. Last year it decreased by 3%. It is currently 153,981 copies. The share of subscriptions in the circulation sold is 91.2 percent.

In addition to the PNP, the Passau publishing group publishes two free advertising papers. Am Sonntag , founded in 2000, is an independent Sunday newspaper that is published in the core circulation area around Passau. The press courier , which appeared for the first time in 2007, is a free advertising paper compiled from the local editions of the past week.
Every autumn, the publishing group organizes the “People in Europe” series.
The group also included the Czech company Vltava-Labe-Press, as , which has a very large market position among the regional press in the Czech Republic and was largely built up under the VLP. In August 2015 it became known that she had sold her daughter to the Czech-Slovak financial investor Penta Investments . The Passau publishing group also owns newspapers in Slovakia and Poland.
In July 2012, the Passau publishing group bought the Trostberger Tagblatt , which means that, in addition to the Trostberger Tagblatt, the Traunreuter Anzeiger with the same content and the weekly newspaper Altbayerische Heimatpost appear under the roof of the Passauer Medienhaus. The shares of the Südostbayerische Rundschau , in which the publishing group already had a 50 percent stake and which obtains its supraregional part from Trostberg, were also completely taken over. In August 2014, the PNP expanded its position in Upper Bavaria and took over the Reichenhaller Tagblatt and the Freilassinger Anzeiger . In November 2016 it was announced that the Donaukurier in Ingolstadt will be taken over by the Passauer Neue Presse with effect from January 1, 2017.
Digital offers
In August 2011, mydealbayern.de was founded, a regional voucher platform for the Passau area, and the Deggendorf region was added in November 2011. The couponing platform was discontinued on March 17, 2014.
With RegioEvent.de, a regional leisure portal for Lower Bavaria, Upper Bavaria and the border region in Upper Austria was founded in November 2011.
On May 14, 2013, Südostbayerische Rundschau , Trostberger Tagblatt and Alt-Neuöttinger Anzeiger launched the news portal for Southeast Bavaria called heimatzeitung.de.
Postal services
The Neue Presse Post GmbH is a regional postal service for the counties of Passau, Deggendorf, Freyung / Grafenau, Rottal-Inn, Dingolfing and rain. It is a subsidiary of the publishing group and was founded in 2009.
social commitment
The Passauer Neue Presse and its readers have been committed to helping children in need at Christmas time since 1992 . The annual fundraising campaign “Ein Licht im Advent” supplements the work of the PNP Foundation with international projects. In total, more than 11.1 million euros (as of August 2011) have been collected for aid projects in this way. Added to this are 5.2 million euros from special campaigns for the flood of the century in 2002 and the victims of the tsunami (2004/2005) in India and Sri Lanka.
