The Naked Man on the Sports Field is a tragic comedy by director Konrad Wolf from 1974.

content

The film depicts a few weeks from the life of the (fictional) sculptor Kemmel. He doesn't always make it easy for himself and his environment. In addition, many of his works are not accepted by those around him. A relief created by him and given to his village ends up in a storage room. In his new job he wants to create a sculpture, but has difficulty finding the right model . When he finally finds it in the worker Hannes, he doesn't want to be a model. He can't do anything with the artist, he's a down-to-earth guy. After some persuasion, Kemmel Hannes can convince. While working, the two men get closer. But even this work does not help him out of the crisis, and the work fails. A visit to his home village gives him a new job. He is supposed to create a sculpture for the anniversary of the local sports club. Kemmel accepts. But when the work is unveiled, he is initially rejected. The dignitaries of the club had imagined a clothed footballer - but they got a naked runner. Only gradually can they get used to the work.

Reviews

"Wolf succeeds in deriving very 'fundamental' questions from scenes of everyday life that are filmed in an unpretentious and unrealistic way, but then unexpectedly receive a satirical punch line."

- Gregor, Ulrich: History of the film :

“Quiet, episodic film satire by DEFA director Konrad Wolf, who died in 1982, who pinpoints characteristic details of everyday life in the GDR and describes the artist's contradicting situation in his society. Differentiated in terms of content and design and demanding, one of the best DEFA films ever. "

Remarks

The film is very unspectacular and sober in its design; everything that happens runs smoothly and is presented correspondingly brittle. However, the film seems very warm and lovable to the viewer and has an enormous aftereffect. Last but not least, Konrad Wolf's own experiences have flowed into this film. It's about the constant search for the artist's place in socialist society - a position that Konrad Wolf also sought again and again. As a member of a family of intellectuals , it was sometimes difficult for him to find his place in the workers 'and peasants' state.

The sculptures in the film are made by the sculptor Werner Stötzer , who embodies the role of the mayor. Other works are by Will Lammert and Albert Ebert . The well-known reporter Hans-Joachim Wolle was a reporter . Filming locations were Steinach , Werner Stötzer's hometown, and Steinheid .

The series of photographs with portraits of old women, which the photographer Angela, portrayed by Ursula Werner, presents in the film, comes from Einar Schleef , who is also mentioned in the opening credits as the author of a “photo report”.
