Derrick Labrent Jones Jr. (born February 15, 1997 in Chester , Pennsylvania ) is an American basketball player who plays in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the Miami Heat .

career

The left-hander played at Archbishop John Carroll High School in Radnor ( Pennsylvania ) until 2015 . From the 2015/16 season he was a member of the university team of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Jones made a name for himself as a player with considerable bounce and a penchant for dunking things to watch . In March 2016, he was excluded from playing and training for the time being because of insufficient results in university exams. Jones came on 30 missions for UNLV in the course of the NCAA game year 2016/17 and scored an average of 11.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per encounter for the university team.

In April 2016 he announced his move to professional business, but initially left the option of returning to the university open. He signed up for the NBA draft process , but was not considered there in June 2016. In September 2016, he was signed by the NBA team Phoenix Suns . For the team from the state of Arizona , he was used in 32 games in the 2016/17 season, additional match practice was obtained with the Northern Arizona Suns in the NBA D League .

At the beginning of December 2017, Jones and Phoenix separated, and at the end of the month he was awarded a two-way contract by the Miami Heat , which also allowed him to play in the NBA G-League at Sioux Falls Skyforce . At the beginning of July 2018, he received a new contract from Miami. In February 2020 he won the NBA's Slam Dunk Contest .
