The German-Pakistani relations ( Urdu : جرمن اور پاکستان کے تعلقات) describe the bilateral relations between the two states of Germany and Pakistan .
They have existed since Pakistan's independence in 1947 and have grown steadily stronger since then. This is particularly evident in the annual increase in trade relations (see: Economic Relations ), a lively cultural exchange and several German development aid in favor of Pakistan . (see: Funding and Development Aid )
Germany is represented by the embassy in the Pakistani capital Islamabad , the consulate general in Karachi and the honorary consul in Lahore . The Pakistani embassy is in Berlin , the consulate general in Frankfurt am Main and the honorary consuls in Düsseldorf and Pullach im Isar valley .
Political Relations
In 2012, a military agreement was signed between Germany and Pakistan for the first time. Since then, the two countries have been working steadily together in the fight against terror in and around Pakistan. There are currently no arms exports, but they are under discussion.
“Together we will sound out how we can, if necessary, intensify our cooperation in the fight against terrorism. […] We are on Pakistan's side in the fight against terrorism, ” said Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen during her visit to Islamabad in December 2015.
Economic relationships
Germany has been one of Pakistan's five largest trading partners since 2010 . In 2013, exports from Germany to Pakistan amounted to 840.6 million euros and imports around 1 billion euros.
Germany mainly exports machinery, chemicals and metals, while Pakistan specializes in clothing, textiles and agricultural products.
In 1997 the "Pakistan German Business Forum" (PGBF) was founded. Since this non-profit organization was founded, bilateral economic relations between Germany and Pakistan have strengthened significantly. Since then, the organization has had a steadily increasing number of members. The headquarters of the PGBF is in the Pakistani city of Karachi . In 2014, further organizations were founded for the purpose of economic development between the two countries: In Germany the "GATE to Pakistan eV" based in Pullach and in Pakistan the "German Pakistan Trade and Invest" also based in Karachi .
Promotion and development aid
Germany and Pakistan have been working together on the further development of Pakistan since 1961 . The focus is on the areas of health, education, energy generation and securing a democratic, stable government.
The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) is running a project to reform the education system until 2016.
“Pakistan's high population growth and the associated increase in the number of employable people are putting a strain on the country's economy. Millions of young people enter the labor market every year. However, since they lack the necessary qualifications, they are unable to find employment and contribute to the economic development of the country, ” says the official website of the organization. The project should make it easier to get vocational training and the quality of the training should improve.
German funding such as the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and the Friedrich-Neumann-Stiftung support Pakistan in realizing improvements, especially in the area of human rights and the advancement of women, but also, for example, in their climate policy.
Humanitarian aid
In 2014, the German government provided aid totaling 5.1 billion euros to help Pakistan cope with its biggest crises. These can mainly be summarized in the flood crisis , the situation of internally displaced persons in conflict areas and the situation of Afghan refugees in Pakistan. Germany focuses its assistance mainly on building accommodation (for various target groups), as well as providing food and education for refugees.
