Water polo
There were two qualifying matches on May 21 and 22 in Wuppertal and on May 28 and 29 in Leipzig . The two games in Wuppertal were won by the West selection 4: 3 and 4.2, while the two games in Leipzig were won by the East selection with 5: 4 and 6: 4. The two West German players Hans Hoffmeister and Lajos Nagy , who had fled the GDR and Hungary respectively, had not traveled to Leipzig . Since there was a tie between points and goals after these four games, a playoff was played on July 28th in Uppsala, Sweden, which won the Western selection 3-1.
Since the German water polo team had taken 6th place at the 1956 Olympics, the West German selection qualified directly for Rome, where they (again) took 6th place.
