occupation

Didi - The Expert is a German mix-up and political comedy starring Dieter Hallervorden .

action

The film takes place against the background of a (fictional) mayor election campaign between the popular parties " German People's Party ", DVP (based on the CDU) and " German Progressive Party ", DFP (based on the SPD). While the individual groups are trying to catch votes, Willi Schulze is frustrated. The politically disenchanted auto mechanic lives with the runaway orphan boy Paul in a backyard workshop and never misses an opportunity to moan about the politicians and tear down advertising posters.

When it breaks down during a test drive, it is taken away by Willy Schneider , an election campaign expert brought from the USA by the DVP (hence the title). With slogans like “ Don't think twice, it's alright! “Help the DVP win. During the journey, there is an accident that seriously injures Schneider and Schulze loses his memory. Since all personal documents are destroyed, Schulze is thought to be the US expert because of the statements made by Schneider.

After a stay in the clinic that reactivated the (wrong) personality, Schulze, despite some clumsiness, rose to be the savior of the DVP, who spoke to Schneider with slogans and banal statements from his previous life (" We have to do more! ", " We have to tighten the screws! " and “ Full throttle in the sun! ”). But Schulze also wants to win over the DFP competition, and the pseudo-expert also has doubts about himself. Only Paul, who was discovered by orphanage hunters, and a dissatisfied customer who was devastating the workshop, let Schulze's memories come back.

With the knowledge he has regained, Schulze now plays off the parties against each other and exposes the unfair election campaign of all those involved as a frenzy of everyday lies and hypocrisy, which he also makes public to the voters. On the evening of the election, both DVP and DFP suffered heavy losses of votes. Schulze wants to use the television broadcast and, together with the recovered tailor, clear up the misunderstanding about his mix-up. But Schneider was in the same clinic as Schulze and, after being brainwashed, now considers himself the auto mechanic.

Schulze is now to be referred to psychiatry because of the TV scandal and the election slips caused. In the end, however, Paul Wudke, who ran away again, was able to free him from the predicament. Both start a new life.

Trivia

The film was made in West Berlin. In the film, the vehicles all have the license plate abbreviation P to avoid political references to the election campaign in a real city. After reunification, however, P became the hallmark of Potsdam, which makes the film seem curious from today's perspective.

criticism

"Viscous satire that tries to hand out swipes against election campaign methods and party-political tactics without any particular cabaret originality."

DVD release

The film was released on DVD on November 25, 2005 by Turbine Medien .
