The 80s show was a ten-part TV show from RTL moderated by Oliver Geissen . It was the first of three retro shows on RTL; The 70s Show and The 90s Show were broadcast in the following two years . The program was produced by Günther Jauch .

Concept of broadcast

Each episode of the show was dedicated to a year in the 1980s , beginning with 1980. Events, everyday objects, trends, and successful films and music titles from the respective year were presented. During the broadcast, a discussion took place between the moderator and several prominent studio guests. It was mainly about the events and the way of life of the 1980s, i. H. the typical food, hairstyles, dances, music, etc.

In the broadcast, film excerpts and video clips were briefly played. Celebrities were shown in these who commented on the events shown. This style, characterized by feature films, has now firmly established itself in the German television landscape.

Guests

Well-known people from shows, politics and sports were guests. In addition to celebrities who were particularly popular in 2002, these were especially those who were related to the 1980s or the events of the year presented. Some of the studio guests were also shown in the film clips and commented on them.

success

The show, which was broadcast on Fridays after Wer wird Millionär in April 2002 , reached an average of six million viewers and is therefore considered extremely successful. The ten regular programs were followed by a best-of and at the end of 2002 four specials, and in 2003 another best-of. The show triggered a wave of so-called “retro shows” on German television that imitated the show concept of this show. The clips commented on by celebrities, which are still used today in a large number of comparable retro and ranking show formats, also set the style.
