action

Fabian Groys is a successful investigative journalist for the (fictional) Berlin news magazine Die Woche and is also addicted to games. His boss assigns him the new volunteer Nadja. To keep them busy, Groys puts them on the case of a man who threw himself into a lion enclosure and died there. She finds out that the man worked for the waste disposal company Kuros and was exposed to toxic substances there. When Groys and Nadja do research in the Ruhr area, they find out that the worker had gradually lost his memory. Another employee of the company's smelter also had health problems.

A Berlin PR agency has received the order from TT-Holding - Kuros' parent company - to influence federal German legislation in such a way that certain toxic substances are monitored less restrictively. They speak to the responsible Minister Delbrück about this.

Groys and Nadja discover during their further work that the Kuros employees have previously been in Afghanistan for the German Armed Forces . However, they have been given false information that the agency has given them. She also hired an actress who played the second worker's girlfriend. The agency also "hacked" Groys' office and private computers. Nevertheless, the two write a story that is selected as the cover story by the editor-in-chief.

When Groys was leaked the medical record of an affected worker and the agency's hacker notices this, the agency's employees decided to start where it really hurts: Groys diabetes . They hacked his blood glucose meter so that it reads incorrectly and he injects himself with an overdose of insulin .

The vote in the Bundestag on the hazardous substances is shown on television. The TT files are packed in the agency and sparkling wine is toasted.

Groys has since found out that his story is based on false information. His editor-in-chief refuses to make this public and puts Groys on leave for two weeks. Meanwhile, Nadja has been given a job in Hamburg. She already misses him.

Reviews

Wolfgang Höbel judged in the Spiegel that director Hochhäusler was only minimally interested in the realistic rendering of everyday journalism, gangster business and political activities in Germany in 2015. “The victors' lies” is the film of a storyteller, not that of a documentarist. Finally, he praised the film's “amazingly beautiful images”.

Oliver Kaever described the film for Spiegel Online as a German political thriller that deserves its name . Hochhäusler left with him "finally the backyard of the Berlin school and is looking for the general public".

In the online edition of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , Peter Körte criticized the fact that the film lacked the decisive emotions “despite the outstanding imagery and analytical substance”.

During that time , Katja Nicodemus was enthusiastic about the work of the cameraman Reinhold Vorneider and about the "rhythmic montage" by Stefan Stabenow. On the other hand, she criticized the two main characters as "empty spaces": "In their stereotypical system - cool professional, ambitious hopper - they develop too little self-will."
