Die Unbedingten is a German short film , shot in 2009 , about the murder of the writer August von Kotzebue in Mannheim by the theology student Karl Ludwig Sand . Sand belonged to the secret society The Unconditional . As a diploma film, the film is the final project of two students from the University of Television and Film Munich (HFF) in coproduction with Bayerischer Rundfunk . The film was shot in Bad Windsheim and Bamberg , among others . The premiere was in 2009, and in 2010 the film was shown on Bayerischer Rundfunk and several film festivals.

The young philosophy student Jakob Feister and his friend Carl Ludwig Sand both lived as outsiders in the small university town of Jena in 1819 . They have nothing in common with the other adapted students. And even from the Germania fraternity they have been expelled because of their radical views. Because they are the pupils of the brilliant speaker Karl Follen, and members of his secret society, The Unconditional, which the secret police watch .
