action

The game scenes, which are based on real events and experiences of the four role models of the film characters, alternate with detailed interviews with contemporary witnesses who are still alive . The Jewish teenagers Cioma Schönhaus , Hanni Lévy , Ruth Arndt-Gumpel and Eugen Friede manage to become somewhat invisible in the middle of the strongest waves of arrests against Jews in the capital of Berlin . Schönhaus, actually a graphic artist, secretly forges passports for Jews and can save so many lives. Hanni Lévy tries to pass as an Aryan with bleached hair ; she repeatedly finds supporters by chance. Eugen Friede lives with a German family, wears a Hitler Youth uniform and helps the resistance group Community for Peace and Reconstruction . Ruth Arndt-Gumpel disguises herself as a war widow and serves as a housekeeper to Nazi officers black market delicacies.

production

The script for the film was written by director Claus Räfle together with Alejandra López .

The shooting ran from March 30 to May 4, 2016 in Berlin , North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony . In Lower Saxony, some scenes were filmed in Bückeburg Castle . The not very spacious chambers under the roof of the palace served as a backdrop for the hiding places of the "invisible" in Berlin attics.

The film, which is distributed by Tobis Film , celebrated its premiere in Berlin on October 10, 2017 and was released in cinemas across Germany on October 26, 2017.

For the actor Andreas Schmidt , who embodies Hans Winkler in the film, The Invisible - We Want to Live was the last role before his death on September 28, 2017.

background

The hiding of Jewish residents before the Nazis' persecution of the Jews within their own hometown was extremely risky. The dangerous situation of the rescuers is also shown . Without shelter, Jews could hardly hide for long. Luggage carried along would arouse suspicion during controls. Missing papers led to the arrest. Some of the people in hiding, also known as “illegals” or “submarines”, were able to coordinate with helpers, some found rescuers by chance, others had a small network that kept providing shelter and food for a long time.

criticism

The film service judged: " The film cleverly combines eyewitness interviews with exciting re-enactments, with the survivors turning out to be gifted narrators whose memories are staged". The “characters created by the actors” would “stimulate comparison with the real role models in an attractive way”.
