The Golden Goose is a DEFA fairy tale film from 1964, directed by Siegfried Hartmann . The film, made in the DEFA studios of the GDR , is based on Grimm's fairy tale The Golden Goose .

action

The shoemaker boy Klaus and his two brothers Kunz and Franz inherited a small shoemaker's workshop from their late father. Because the lazy brothers avoid work wherever possible, Klaus, whom they call "stupid", has to do it alone.

One day, like his two brothers, he goes into the forest to cut wood. He is met by an old mother who has also met his two brothers. For giving the old mother a piece of his cake and a drink, Klaus receives a goose made entirely of gold. It later turns out that anyone who touches her sticks to her. At first, the two sisters Lies and Gret stick to the golden goose. But as they continue on the way together, more people touch the goose and get stuck on it. Then Klaus has the idea to visit the princess, who has lost her smile, because whoever makes the princess laugh should keep her as a wife.

When Klaus and all the people who are clinging to the golden goose appear at the castle, the princess breaks out into a hearty laugh. But the king doesn't want to keep his promise, so he gives Klaus more tasks. With a lot of skill, Klaus gets the chest with the seven locks into the throne room and puts the prince troublemaker and his cronies to flight. The king then sees that Klaus deserves his respect and agrees to a wedding.

Production background

In The Golden Goose is a pure studio production of the DEFA in Babelsberg. For Karin Ugowski, who plays the princess who can't laugh, it is her second film role after Frau Holle . The fairy tale film was released in GDR cinemas on September 25, 1964.

In September 2000, the film appeared next to the original version in English in Icestorm Entertainment GmbH for the first time on DVD.

The songs from the film were released on October 27, 2003 together with other pieces of music from other DEFA fairy tale films under the title Fairy Tale Land - Music from DEFA Fairy Tale Films.

In contrast to the fairy tale, the person who asks for food and drink is a non-existent old mother in the fairy tale and not a beggar. In addition, the tasks that the stupid has to pass at the end of the film in order to marry the princess differ .

criticism

The lexicon of international films called The Golden Goose a "fairy tale film that sometimes turns Grimm's fairy tale into crude situational comedy". "Memorable, child-friendly songs and the lively play of the main actors guarantee largely untroubled enjoyment," the LdiF continued.
