action

Carmen works in the senior citizens' residence "Vileta". There she also has to do with Conrad Fellinger, whom she describes as a Casanova and a born lone fighter. For him, every new day is full of adventure and promises. Other residents are Otto and Jakob, a homosexual couple who still mean a lot in old age. The couple Günter and Karin are also among the residents, as is Rosie, whose husband is already dead. As much as you try, life suddenly happens without the old people, is Karin's opinion.

Conrad, Otto and Jakob, Günter and Karin and Rosie play the lottery together. This Saturday they are again sitting in front of the TV to watch the numbers being drawn. They are stunned to see how one by one their numbers fall. You crack the lottery jackpot and win a total of 30 million euros.

Conrad dreams of finally being able to let out herself sexually again. When he is together with Tatjana, however, he fails. Otto and Jakob, on the other hand, fulfill their dream of their own sailing yacht. Rosie receives a visit from her son Alfi and his wife Gesa. Obviously, both are afraid that the old lady in the retirement home could be pulled out of the pocket of the money that Gesa, above all, would like to have herself at any price. Karin would like to finally fulfill her dream of seeing a little of the world and traveling. However, her suggestions fail because of the ignorance of her husband Günter, who thinks that you have everything you need here in the home. So Karin decides to travel alone. In her high-priced hotel in South Africa , she meets Annegret, who is about the same age, who surrounds herself with young men whose time she has to buy dearly. The two women harmonize with each other and team up. Annegret says she and Karin are people who want to be loved.

Alfi and Gesa are looking for a house and present Rosie an impressive villa with almost 1000 square meters of living space and a large park area and then lead her to a garden house that can be redesigned to suit the elderly, as Gesa thinks, because Rosie would have her own little realm in that There was also space for a nurse on the upper floor.

Conrad, on the other hand, throws his money out the window with his hands full and even gets Günter, who feels lonely without his wife, to take part in his debauchery with him. When he collapses in front of Günter's eyes in the morning, he is admitted to the hospital, where it turns out that he has swallowed too many potency-increasing drugs . Since Conrad had asked about an Inge Leiphold, she was notified and told Carmen that she had been with Conrad once, but initially only to annoy her parents. Inge tells him that he has a daughter named Ella. When Conrad is feeling better again, he visits her at her workplace and tries to convey to her that he missed her, although he hadn't even known she existed until now. When Ella decides to visit him in the retirement home, she is late. He died that night. He left her a letter and a check for 7,000,000 euros.

Otto and Jakob seem to really enjoy the windfall. But when Jakob falls overboard and goes under, although he can actually swim, Otto talks to Carmen about his boyfriend and says that he has the wonderful talent of being happy. Both know, however, that Jakob suffers from insidious dementia .

Rosie continues to be seen as a burden by her daughter-in-law and remains deported in her summer house just as she knows it from Alfi and Gesa from the senior citizens' residence. Even though she financed everything, Gesa doesn't want her in the villa if possible. Alfi turns out to be no match for his wife and dances to her tune. When Rosie then also realizes that her son and daughter-in-law are having a big party, but they are not wanted, it causes her to become so slender. Agnieszka, her resolute Polish nurse, is concerned. However, Gesa doesn’t give up until Rosie has given her son all the money she won.

When a thunderstorm rages one night and Rosie's little dog, her everything, has disappeared, Rosie swears when she can hug the loyal animal again that it cannot go on like this. She is returning to the retirement home, but only temporarily. Together with Agnieszka she then goes to the villa and clears the table. She claims both the property and her money back and demands that her son and his wife move out immediately. Then she moves in with all the lottery winners and Agnieszka and also offers Carmen and the nurse Ursula to look after the residents there. The villa still has a surprise in store for the new residents in the basement - a large swimming pool. And last but not least, Günter made up his mind to fulfill Conrad's wish to scatter his ashes in Brazil on the Copacabana . So Karin comes on another trip abroad.

criticism

The critics of the TV magazine TV Spielfilm pointed with the thumbs up, gave one of three possible points for humor, ambition and tension and drew the conclusion: “Cheerful-melancholy, brilliantly cast”.

Tilmann P. Gangloff gave the film 4½ out of 6 possible stars and summarized: “Getting old is not for cowards. ARD and ZDF are discovering their target group: more and more people's retirement age offers material for light films with a serious background. The senior comedy 'The Last Million' tells with a light hand, a wonderful ensemble and great dialogues of the lottery win of a handful of old people, whose lives have changed radically due to the unexpected wealth - or not. "[...]" The special class of the film results not least from the casualness with which the script and direction suggest whole biographies. The actors are "without exception outstanding," said Gangloff. "The old Casanova Conrad, for example" is "a prime role for Michael Gwisdek". "The many wonderful ideas of this film include the idea of making Jerry Lee Lewis' ambiguous rock'n'roll hit 'Great Balls of Fire' something like Conrad's signature music".

Prisma confirmed to the “successful director Udo Witte” that he “staged the story with subtle wit, a feeling for complex character drawings and a skillful balance of humor and tragedy”. "In addition to the clever script, peppered with pointed dialogues, the film also lives from a great cast of actors".
