Dionysius von Podewils (* 1590 - † June 2, 1647 in Dresden ) was ducal gottorpscher, later royal Danish councilor and envoy and court marshal of Christian IV.

Life

Dionysius von Podewils came from the well- known noble family of Podewils , who lived in Pomerania . His parents were Anselm von Podewils († 1617) and Anna von Wedel . A brother of Ewald von Podewils († after 1629) was Lieutenant Colonel with General Count Johann II of Merode († 1633).

After Podewils had studied at various universities, he was first court marshal to Duke Hans the Younger of Sønderborg in 1616 , then in 1622 to Duke Friedrich III. from Gottorp . In this position he is said to have participated in the reconciliation of the duke with King Christian IV in 1629.

The king became acquainted with Podewils at the latest, whereupon he gave up the Gottropschen services in order to serve as councilor and court marshal of the king to Prince Christian . In this capacity he was sent to Saxony in 1634 to organize the courtship of the prince for Magdalena Sibylle , daughter of Elector Johann Georg I of Saxony . After more than seven years, Podewils resigned from his position as court marshal, but was still used by the king in diplomatic matters. In September 1644 he was entrusted with an important mission to Poland . After the Peace of Brömsebro in 1645 he was commissioner in the handover of the permanent positions held by the Swedes in Jutland .

In 1647 he followed his lord Prince Christian on his trip to Saxony, where he died with him on the same day in Dresden.

The king lent him the Gram estate in Sønderjylland , where Podewils amassed a valuable library, which was destroyed by the Swedes in 1644. Gram passed by inheritance to his son Gregor († 1658) and, after his death, to the von Schack family . None of Dionysius' sons continued the tribe .
