The district of Pampamarca is located in the province of La Unión in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district was founded on June 22, 1825. It has an area of ​​788 km². The 2017 census counted 1204 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1725, in 2007 it was 1430. The district administration is located in the approximately 2600  m high village of Mungui with 178 inhabitants (as of 2017). Mungui is 3 km north-northwest of the provincial capital, Cotahuasi .

Geographical location

The district of Pampamarca is located in the Cordillera Volcánica in the northwest of the province of La Unión. It covers the catchment area of the Río Pampamarca, which flows into the Río Cotahuasi in the south of the district . The Cordillera Huanzo runs in the far north of the district .

The Pampamarca district is bordered on the southwest by the district Charcana , the west by the district Oyolo ( province Paucar del Sara Sara ), to the north by the district Coronel Castañeda ( province Parinacochas ), to the east by the district Huaynacotas and in the extreme south to the districts Cotahuasi and Toro .
