action

Commissario Brunetti investigates the murder of the glass manufacturer Giovanni de Cal. In addition to various suppliers that the victim did not pay, Giorgio Tassini comes under suspicion. He has been with de Cal's company for years and has made himself suspicious of himself by reporting de Cal to the police. Tassini blames his boss for a serious illness in his little daughter. He claims that his genetic makeup has changed because he had to deal with arsenic for years. He can now allegedly prove that the glass factory discharges its waste unfiltered into the lagoon . With this knowledge, he begins to blackmail de Cal's daughter, who knew nothing of her father's machinations. Now she knows why her father never let her look in the books. But since she does not want to be blackmailed, she instructs her employees to have the waste disposed of properly with immediate effect. Tassini does not experience this change of heart, however, because shortly after his blackmail attempt he is found dead on the company premises. Brunetti now suspects Assunta de Cal to be behind the murders. A blackmailer is a nuisance and her father wanted to disinherit her and sell the company she was so attached to.

Commissioner Brunetti first sets out to find the place in the lagoon where Tassini claims to have found his evidence. Together with Sergeant Lorenzo Vianello, he actually finds large amounts of pollutants that you can ultimately assign to the glass factory. This is how Brunetti learns of the blackmail, but Assunta de Cal asserts that he did not know anything about it.

The alleged environmentalist Gianluca Fasano has his property right next to de Cal's factory and Brunetti says that Fasano must have heard something of an illegally laid drain pipe. He is also close friends with Assunta de Cal. Closer investigations bring to light another illegal drainage pipe that runs into the lagoon from Fasano's factory at the same point. After reviewing Fasano's alibis about the times of the murder, it turns out that despite his appointments, he had enough time to commit the murders.

After Fasano notices that the investigation has targeted him and that the noose is tightening more and more, he reveals himself to Assunta. She is furious when she hears that her boyfriend killed her father because he noticed his illegal waste disposal and tried to blackmail him. In the fight he knocks Assunta down and is about to kill her too. Brunetti, who has just found the last evidence against Fasano, comes just in time to save Assunta. Fasano is led away in handcuffs.

Reviews

"Venice (TV) crime thriller based on Donna Leon, located somewhere between suspense and humor."

Tilmann P. Gangloff from tittelbach.tv judged: “More than recently, screenwriter Holger Joos connects the investigations of Inspector Brunetti (Uwe Kockisch) with his private life. Since Michael Degen, as Brunetti's tragicomic superior Patta, also has significantly more amusing appearances than usual, “'As through dark glass'" is almost a crime comedy. "

The critics of the television magazine TV Spielfilm gave it a medium rating (thumbs to the side) and said "It's a shame again and again: top-notch backdrop, zero Italian flair." Their overall conclusion was: "As Italian as a roast pork."
