action

An unforeseen death occurs in the old people's home where Brunetti's mother Amelia lives. It is again the young sister Immaculata who finds the dead. Since it is not the first time that she has found someone who has died, she suspects and confides in Brunetti that there are murders in the retirement home. Brunetti cannot quite believe this until Immaculata, who has left her order, suffers an apparent accident and is henceforth in a coma. Brunetti begins to investigate and has the sick woman guarded. One night he hears the alarm bells, even though a nun is in the room. She is, however, the disguised Signorina Lerini, the deeply religious daughter of one of the deceased. Assuming that Brunetti understands her on the basis of the same deep piety, she confesses to him that she herself committed the murders of her father and others, because they mocked God or in order to get the extensive capital that the victims do not allow the church wanted to. Immaculata's suspicions made this dangerous for her, which is why she pushed her in front of the bus. Signorina Lerini is arrested by the arriving officers. Finally, Brunetti visits his mother, who meanwhile lived with his family, in the old people's home, where he also meets Immaculata, who has returned and recovered.
