Eternal youth is a German TV movie of Sigi Rothemund from the year 2019 , which on the eponymous novel by Donna Leon is based. It is the 25th episode of the ARD crime film series Donna Leon with Uwe Kockisch as Commissario Brunetti in the lead role.

action

Commissario Brunetti, who actually doesn't like giving presents to others, reads 80-year-old Contessa Lando-Continui's every wish from the lips. She asks him to solve a family accident that was covered up 15 years ago. Her now 30-year-old granddaughter Manuela almost drowned after falling into the Rio San Polo. From that incident, she suffered permanent brain damage due to the lack of oxygen, so that she is on a low mental level. Her former lifesaver has now been stabbed to death after all this time and Brunetti sets out to investigate.

background

Eternal Youth was filmed from April 11, 2018 to June 16, 2018 at the same time as the 26th (and last) episode Silent Waters in Venice and the surrounding area. The first broadcast on Das Erste took place on April 18, 2019 at prime time . On January 3, 2020, the episode was released as a crime thriller edition on DVD together with the previous case Ewige Jugend by Universum Film .

Eternal Youth is the last installment in the series in which actor Michael Degen played the role of Vice Questore Patta. However, Patta only appears in two short video messages in which he gives a reason for his absence and expresses the expectation that Venice is in good hands with Commissario Brunetti.

criticism

The critics of the television magazine TV Spielfilm gave the film a medium rating and pointed with their thumbs to the side. They stated that the plot "as in the book is too far-fetched and therefore unbelievable".

Tilmann P. Gangloff also decided in his review on tittelbach.tv for a medium rating (3.5 out of 6 stars). The story is “quite interesting”, but the episode is “at best average in the context of the series”. For a “real thriller” it is “not exciting enough”. The impressions of the touristic Venice that are typical for the series also “pushed the pace quite considerably”.
